I don't think I've ever used over 1GB of data in the years I've had a smartphone. I only used 750MB last month when on vacation for 5 days in the Chicago area when I violated my TOC and tethered a couple PCs to my jailbroken iPhone 3G. Wi-Fi down in my part of the motel. Advantage to SIM cards, since I could swap to my 3G when I needed tethering, and back to my 4 when I was out.

I probably should cut back, spending $30/month for my unlimited data plan, and another $30/month for my iPad's plan. Could save $10/month by cutting both back to 2GB/month each. But what IF?

You should just jailbreak your iPhone 4 and use it as a tethering device, and cancel the iPad plan completely. Unless there are times you carry the iPad but not the iPhone...

I had JB the 3G because it was out of warranty.

And there are advantages to having 3G for the iPad on its own. Simplicity, and battery life on the phone. When I tethered with my 3G phone, I had it plugged in.

No one mentioned the Motorola XT701?

    Seems like a good option.

My alltel market was divested to ATT and I have been watching threads like these closely. With my grandfathered smart choice plan do I need to watch what smartphone I put my sim in to avoid getting moved to an ATT plan? AT&T has stated that if you upgrade to a iPhone, captivate or torch you will have to have a AT&T rate plan. Does it make any difference if I only use unlocked phones? Or am I in the same boat as the OP? Seems like my situation is different because my plan is approved by AT&T for some smart phones

One of my lines is using a Telus Milestone with the $10 plan. But I use a Nexus One on my line and still haven't been bothered, so I don't know whats up.

Do so for as long as you can. Nothing wrong with that.

I plan to. My next phone will be the Desire Z from Bell. Hopefully that won't trigger anything either.

How in the world did you get the $10 plan? Grandfathered in?

It's the dumbphone data plan for people with unlimited texting.

Hmmm, I'm on the $15/mo for dumbphones, so if I add texting the data will drop to $10/mo?

You can get the $10 unlimited data for featurephones if you have unlimited family messaging. I don't know if the same applies for single line unlimited messaging plans as I don't have one nor do I care.

Both my husband and I have the Nokia E63 and they are on the $10 grandfathered plans. Bought them both through Dell for about $150 each.

I am on my own plan with an unlocked Telus Milestone and I have the $30 unlimited data/unlimited texting combo plan (essentially the $15 unlimited MediaNet + unlimited texting). I routinely use around 1GB of data.

I have had $15 MediaNet on my phones for over 4 years, and have not bought a phone from AT&T in 5 years. I have had a smartphone the whole time. I only added texting two years ago, when I started getting more than I liked paying for. I now send/receive around 1000-2000 txts a month.
