Verizon: Droid Eris Android 2.0 update officially coming Q1 2010

Just found a few news pages indicating that Verizon yesterday has officially announced and committed to this update that we've only been able to speculate about so far.

Direct quote: “The Droid Eris currently using Android 1.5, can and will be upgraded to newer a Android operating system software in first quarter 2010. The enhancement will allow customers to continue to enjoy the powerful HTC Sense experience while also gaining the additional benefits of Google Maps Navigation.”

And we know that "newer version" means 2.0, because HTC has said they are skipping 1.6 for Sense and moving straight to 2.0, as well as the mention of Google Nav. In fact, since a leaked ROM with Sense running on Android 2.1 has been floating around all week, it might even be 2.1!

It doesn't give us a very precise date, but at least we can know for sure that it's coming now.

You may be correct that the "newer version" is 2.0 (or even 2.1), but Google Maps Navigation is now available on Android 1.6, so perhaps the Eris could be updated to 1.6 first.

I haven't really followed what HTC is planning though, so you may very well be correct.

The thing is, if HTC has to get sense working with the lastest and greatest, why bother with more work, just go straight to 2.1.

No sense (HaHa) in HTC doing 1.6, then 2.0. and lastly 2.1. By the time they get around to porting sense to 2.1, version 3 will be out.

Plus, from reading around, HTC has stated the only way this will be released to us is if Verizon requests the update. So gimme it, now!

That's true, I forgot that Google Nav has come to 1.6 recently. Still, the other points stand and there's no real reason to believe the update will be 1.6.
