    Internet TRULY required for G1??

So I have heard and read all kinds of answers. My brother is interested in buying a G1 from me, but he doesn't want to pay for the internet (I know...I know....I don't get it either). I guess he just really digs the phone (maybe one day he won't be such a penny pincher).

So...I heave heard that you do have to activate the internet and keep it. I have also heard you have to activate it but can later cancel it after the fact and the phone still remains active. I have also heard that it can be activated without internet. Doing research online also provides mixed results for me.

    Anyone?

at point of purchase it is required, but if you are just handing it off to him and it is already at main screen, you could just use it like a regular phone, but pretty much not a good phone to have without the web part
My opinions and statements do not reflect the policies or stance of T-Mobile

Its a refurbished unit (warranty exchange) that has not been used yet.
Would he need to add it initially to activate it? But then he could remove it?
