Do you need a valid IMEI to activate sim?

Do you need to enter a valid IMEI number to activate a Go Phone PAYG sim-card on the AT&T activation website? Or can you type in a random number?

It has to be a valid IMEI. It does not have to be the phone you are going to use. One of the fifteen digits is a check digit. The IMEI will be rejected if the check digit does not match the check digit generated for the other fourteen digits in the IMEI.

OK. Can I activate a few different SIM cards using the same ("valid") IMEI.. I take it the IMEI doesnt have to be AT&T registed etc.. ?
