Shanghai Data Packets and Minutes Options

I will be in Shanghai for 6 months to a year starting in February.

I am going to buy a GSM smartphone but I have a couple questions.

1.Can I choose either China Mobile or Unicom China with any unlocked GMS phone?

    2. Which carrier is cheaper for minutes and data packets? I am interested in 3g, voice mail, email and text messages.

    3. Do I buy a prepaid sim card? Do prepaid sim cards have data packets AND minutes on them? What other options are there? I will need a Chinese number. I will be using the phone a lot

    4. Can I buy a phone in English there? I have heard phones in China are very cheap. What should I watch out for so I don't get ripped off? I want a smartphone that is in English.

    Thank You!
