There's not an oil shortage. OPEC recently talked of (maybe actually did) cutting back on their production. The crappy economy here in the US, and the poor value of the dollar, and "speculation" on future prices is what is causing the problem....

Paid $3.69 for regular this morning. If I can ride the motorcycle every day, I can get by on about $15 (just over 4 gallons) a week....

That does make sense. I think we reached peak oil production a while ago.
    What's that smell?

if they lowered the gas prices, the economy would be so bad

Yeah, its getting real hard to find non-ethanol containing gas around here too. Sad part is it doesn't help emissions much at all, doesn't help keep costs down, and certainly doesn't help gas mileage.

Cheapest I saw on the way in today was $3.75.

87 is $4.09 in CT. CT is always higher. Its 2008. We can shoot a missile at a satellite from outer space falling at a bazillion miles an hour and hit it first shot, but we still use modes of transportation that require the combusting of fossil fuels and high maintainance costs. The price of gas shouldnt even be an issue.

We've had other methods of alternative fuel sources for years. Money and greed are the only reasons why we still use fossil fuels today.

What sucks is that the oil companies already have patents on all the other alternative fuel sources so they still have a monopoly when we run out of oil.

Exactly go to the US patent office website and do a search for shell and exxon mobil and see the patents that come up. Some of them are for methods of better fuel economy that are not being implemented as well as battery technology that they just sit on. This is a screw job so large that the only entity that can do something about it is the united states government. Unfortunately, for the past eight years, we have not had an administration that has found it in their (or their friends) best interest, to take on big oil and now we are paying the price(literally).
