    OpenSignal is at it again, with yet another new report—this one ranking the mobile video experience in different countries around the world. Their methodology is as follows:

    Our tests sample video at multiple resolutions accessed from multiple content providers, and they weigh three main criteria: the load time before the video begins playing, the stalling rate characterized by stops and stutters in the video playback, and the level of picture resolution. We measure video experience on a scale from 0 to 100—the higher the score, the better the video experience.
    They go on to say that scores can be interpreted like this:

    75 to 100=Excellent
    65 to 75=Very Good
    55 to 65=Good
    40 to 55=Fair
    0 to 40=Poor

    What's interesting for me is that even the top countries by rank each only managed a score of "very good":

    01. Czech Republic - 68.52
    02. Hungary - 67.89
    03. Norway - 67.41
    04. Belgium - 67.20
    05. United Arab Emirates - 67.07
    06. Singapore - 66.94
    07. Netherlands - 66.58
    08. Denmark - 65.70
    09. Austria - 65.62
    10. Switzerland - 65.14

    And if you were wondering about Canada and the USA, here's how they ranked overall:

    30. Canada - 59.53 (very good)
    59. United States - 46.84 (fair)

    Guess I should also point out that there's no data for either China or North Korea, likely because OpenSignal (or at least the app stores where it's listed) are blocked there. That's too bad, as I suspect that China would score pretty well in a test like this.

    Proving to its investors that they aren't just a mobile phone wireless provider AT&T is offering you Unlimited Data for $360 per year with no throttling. You read that right! An AT&T representative confirmed that the carrier's new “Airstream Connect” service is not subject to the data restriction applied to many of the operator's other unlimited services.

    AT&T says you can remotely monitor and control parts of their Airstream, such as the vehicle's water tanks and awning.

    2019 Airstream models come equipped to run off of AT&T's LTE network. Customers who choose not to go Unlimited have the option of a 5G per month plan for $25.

    A few months back AT&T ceded its US retail lead to T-Mobile. Apparently AT&T isn't having any of that.

    According to sources close to the matter AT&T announced that it plans to open 1,000 new retail outlets on top of the 5,300 stores it's already running.

    But don't think all stores will look the same. You'll have your traditional retail store then you'll have many of what AT&T calls: "pop-up," stores pictured in the image above. We'll see at least 150 of these type of stores opened by years end.

    Regardless of whether T-Mobile or AT&T maintains their retail lead both pale in comparison to the amount of stores Verizon has. She at last count had around 7,400 retail outlets. Both Verizon and T-Mobile have credited part of their success to their large retail presence.

    Are they right? Will AT&T's new massive retail expansion help regain those most valuable postpaid smartphone customers going into next year? Time will tell. What do you think?

    Got an Android phone on T-Mobile? Well if you just so happen to make an E911 call while on the Network Built for Unlimited then Emergency Responders will be able to find you faster thanks to Google's implementation of ELS or Emergency Location Service.

    Apparently finding E911 callers during emergencies have been quite troublesome. Right now 80% of all emergency calls come from mobile phones and the big heads at the FCC require carriers to locate E911 callers to within 50 meters 80% of the time by the year 2021.

    Is my Android phone supported?

    Well Google says that 99% of Android phones on version 4.0 or higher are already compatible but that doesn't mean your network is up to the task. Thankfully T-Mobile has you covered.

    AT&T's CTO: Andre Fuetsch isn't beating around the bush when describing Verizon's 5G efforts. He's labeled Verizon’s 5G Home service as: “homegrown and proprietary.” He added: “Regarding the competition, I can’t really comment on their strategy but they really seem to be fixated on fixed. It really appears to be this sort of tale of two cities."

    Those of us who are familiar with the situation know that Verizon's initial 5G network is based on the Verizon Technical Forum standard rather than the 3GPP’s 5G New Radio specification. Verizon plans to go back and upgrade each site later on to the standards based system and launch a mobile version of 5G NR sometime in 2019.

    AT&T is letting everyone know that the 5G NR network they are building will be based on the 3GPP standard at launch and will be avaialble in at least a dozen markets this year.

    David Christopher, president of AT&T Mobility and Entertainment, said, “We have certainly tested fixed 5G…and will continue to test it. We just think the biggest opportunity is for mobile. We intend to be a leader in mobile 5G and that’s where we’re starting.”

    Both Verizon and AT&T are only using mmWave spectrum for their initial 5G launches.

    Verizon's VP of Corporate Communications, Jeffrey Nelson fired back: “AT&T says they’re ‘testing 5G fixed.’ Sounds like they’re not being successful. Meanwhile, we are signing up customers in LA, Houston, Indianapolis and Sacramento, and start installing customer equipment – and turning up service – in October.

    We’ve said we’d be first in 5G. And we are. First in the U.S., first on the globe. By using our proprietary 5G technology (which as AT&T’s CTO knows, is 5G), we drive the entire global ecosystem forward. Same as we did with the standards bodies, who credit Verizon’s assertiveness in advancing the 5G technology and ecosystem by 18-24 months faster than where they’d expected to be.

    We’re able to walk and chew gum at the same time. We will be first in 5G mobility. Which means we’re focused on 5G broadband AND 5G mobility.”

    So a new report on Canada's mobile networks is out. Unlike similar reports from Ookla and OpenSignal, this one—by Sascha Segan at PCMag—also looks into the cost of using said mobile networks. And according to Segan, it's the absence of mobile virtual network operators that are hurting our wallets the most:

    Here in the US, there's a thriving shadow-world of low-cost, experimental plans running on the Sprint and T-Mobile networks. MVNOs like Consumer Cellular, Google Fi, Republic Wireless, and Ting have all won repeated awards in our Readers' Choice survey, but the big Canadian carriers don't typically wholesale their networks in the same way. The few MVNOs they do allow—most notably 7-Eleven, PC Mobile, and Petro-Canada—tend to be very restricted in service and pricing.

    The CRTC hasn't shown itself to be open to widening the MVNO market. This March, it ruled against allowing virtual operators to take advantage of lower roaming rates available to the regional carriers.

    Ting's VP of sales and marketing, Michael Goldstein, lives in Toronto and only sells his service in the US, because the Canadian networks don't make it possible.

    "In Canada we don't have any real competition, and the prices are the worst in the world," Goldstein said. "The problem with Canada is that the US has two clear leaders in AT&T and Verizon and a pretty big gap for Sprint and T-Mobile. So Sprint and T-Mobile can say, it makes sense for us to have wholesale partners. Nobody needed to mandate to them that they embrace wholesale. It made perfect strategic sense: they say, even if they lose a customer to us, they rightly say, better that it stay on our network than go somewhere else. Telus, Bell, and Rogers are so even that nobody cares to embrace a wholesale strategy."

    Limited coverage means that Freedom's network can't provide an alternative—if Shaw wholesaled Freedom, its customers would still need to turn to the Big Three outside Freedom's coverage areas.
    Check the first link below to see which network performs best where, but I think we already know that our Big Three networks are generally very good, just also very expensive.

    Do they charge us by the byte? By the time of day? By download speeds?

    For a while many of us have discussed whether or not billing will be different with 5G and AT&T, the nation's 2nd largest mobile operator agrees.

    Executives from one of the nation’s top wireless network operators said that 5G could enable a wide range of billing models beyond the standard monthly fee that users pay today for LTE service.

    David Christopher, the exec who is in charge of Consumer Wireless and Video Businesses says: "AT&T could create a specific pricing tier related to low-latency video gaming services. There will be different tiers of service."

    AT&T currenty employs two pricing models for the services they offer today:

    1. Service is included in the cost of the device, at least for a limited time (like SmartThings’ $99 tracking device that includes a year of service).
    2. Service that is added to a customer’s existing bill (like the $10-per-month service charge for the Apple Watch).

    How AT&T bills for 5G content is beyond criticlal. The carrier is always looking for ways to monetize their services and increase revenue per user.

    When it comes to mobility and the internet in general it's true that a mobile data connection can really only be as good as the backhaul that serves the connecting cell site.

    We saw a huge push for fiber backhaul when T-Mobile first launched their awesome HSPA+ network and now it appears we're about to see it again.

    T-Mobile has confirmed that they have secured fiber backhaul nationwide to secure its 5G endeavors adding massive amounts of capacity at negligible costs.

    T-Mobile has also secured a deal with Crown Castle to deploy at least 25,000 new small cells during the remainder of this year onto next. This is on top of the 18,000 small cells and DAS nodes already rolled out.

    All in all great news for backhaul and great news for density sure to make our connected devices that much faster!

    If you're like me it seems every other week we're reading about one carrier getting hacked or somehow allowing our data sensitive information to get in the wrong hands.

    Just this past month T-Mobile, AT&T and Sprint have all been victims to those with nefarious intentions and they likely will not stop.

    This week in Los Angeles, CA. the big 4 US carriers came together and announced a new collective project named: "Project Verify."

    Together they hope to create a more effective and efficient identification and authorization system aimed at curbing cyber crime and protecting their customers.

    It's kind of nice when they work together on something, huh?

    So I'm back from two weeks in New Zealand (just Auckland, really), and in case anyone else heading that way needs a local SIM card, here's what I think is your best bet: the NZ Travel SIM from Vodafone.

    The first thing to note is that our plan isn't actually listed on Vodafone's site; they're currently showing 4GB for $49 NZD but, as you can clearly see above, what we got instead was 3GB for $43, the equivalent of about $28 USD or $38.50 CAD. While more reasonable than any Big Three plan in Canada that I can think of, it's not nearly as good a deal as what you can get on Optus in Australia—500MB per day for only $2 Aussie dollary-doos.

    The good news is that the SIMs are available at Auckland International Airport upon arrival. Before we even got to immigration we passed by two manned kiosks, plus a third from a competing MVNO. We were able to get our phones connected without having to enter any additional APNs or proxies, and paid for the SIMs at a nearby duty-free counter.

    Vodafone's service was excellent and we had no issues connecting anywhere, even on the somewhat remote island of Waiheke. These particular SIMs also include 200 minutes of calling and 200 texts, even to select international destinations. We didn't have a need for either of those, but they were certainly nice to have. If there's a trip to New Zealand in your future and you need a local SIM, check Vodafone's current rates at the link immediately below.

    You're pretty much looking at it. But I should probably explain.

    I signed the girlfriend and I up for Virgin this past spring, taking advantage of a bonus data promotion that was happening at the time. For me 5 GB of data for $70 CAD/month became an acceptable value only with a lifetime bonus of 3 GB added to the mix. My only issue with this bonus data is how Virgin deliberately obfuscates my usage whenever I check it on their website or app.

    According to Virgin I eat through my 3 GB of bonus data first, then move on to the main course of 5 GB after that. Take another look at the screen shot above and you can probably figure out why they do this—to deliberately mislead me into buying a data add-on before I've even used half of my allotment for the month! As you'd expect, their data add-ons are a decidedly better deal than the $7/100 MB overage fee that you'd otherwise have to pay. Here are the three options that they offer me when I click through:

    $7 for an additional 200 MB
    $20 for an additional 1 GB
    $40 for an additional 3 GB

    ... But remember, I still have 5 GB of unused data on my plan. I know this. They know this. Yet they still seek to deceive.

    So a question for anyone who signed up with Fido or Koodo for a bonus 3 GB plan this past spring, or one of the current back to school promos with a similar data bonus: Is their usage tracking any shadier than it is with Virgin?

    This was certainly unexpected... CNET is not only confirming the existence of the second OnePlus phone to be released this year, but also its first U.S. carrier partner:

    T-Mobile's version of the OnePlus 6T will be optimized for the carrier's network, including the new 600 megahertz band of spectrum being rolled out that promises better and faster coverage.
    To be clear, OnePlus will still sell the 6T without any carrier locks on their online store—come October, however, you'll be able to get one from your local T-Mobile USA shop as well.

    I'll be very interested in finding out whether or not this Tmo-branded 6T will support dual SIM cards. There is ample evidence on these forums of my unfailing belief that no North American carrier will ever sell a dual-SIM phone—for the simple reason that it makes the option for competing service easily available to the customer. Yet one of the core features of a OnePlus phone is support for dual-SIMs. Without it, it would still be a great phone, but with it, and sold by T-Mobile store, well... I guess I'd have to go find a hat to eat.
