HTC Corp. chairwoman Cher Wang, has said that the company is considering buying a smartphone OS. While HP's webOS could be in the cards, Ms. Wang didn't name it specifically.

After the global PC heavyweight Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) announced on Aug. 18 a plan to spin off its PC business and stop sales of its TouchPad tablet that uses the WebOS operating system, a slew of manufacturers like HTC and Samsung reportedly have been trying to acquire the WebOS platform to expand their mobile market reach.

"We have given it thought and we have discussed it internally, but we will not do it on impulse," Wang said in an interview with the Economic Observer of China.
Is this a good move by HTC? Assuming webOS is the logical (and only) choice, would it be a good fit for HTC? Forum discussion here.

In the midst of their bleak outlook on RIM, Canaccord Genuity financial analysts Michael Walkley and Matthew Ramsay said they are seeing increased carrier and OEM support for Windows Phone 7 as a third ecosystem to iOS and Android.

“With our checks indicated increased carrier support and [manufacturer] focus on [Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Phone 7] as a third competitive smartphone ecosystem versus [Google Inc.'s Android] and [Apple's iOS], we believe RIM with its QNX strategy faces a steep uphill climb to regain consumer mindshare,” they said.

Researchers Gartner and IDC have predicted that Windows Phone 7 could have a market share of approximately 20% by 2015. This will put it ahead of Apple's iOS but still significantly behind Google's Android which could be sitting pretty at 49% by then.

Forecasts by researchers Gartner and IDC, which expects a market share of about 20 percent in 2015, are conservative, said Achim Berg, head of Windows Phone marketing, in Berlin today.
Microsoft believes that due to multiple hardware manufacturers, increased marketing efforts, and with the upcoming release of WP7 devices in Europe, it could capture more than 20% of the market.

The Department of Justice has moved to block AT&T's purchase of T-Mobile.

The government sued to block the deal in a Washington, D.C. federal court, arguing that combining the two wireless companies will "substantially lessen competition" in the market. Ultimately, the agency wants the court to also find that AT&T purchasing T-Mobile would violate U.S. antitrust laws and hand down a court order blocking the deal.

In an interview with Reuters regarding HP's possible spinoff of its computer business, the head of HP's Personal Systems Group (PSG) Todd Bradley mentioned that the company...

...could resurrect HP's short-lived TouchPad tablet computer, which was introduced on July 1 before being terminated only about six weeks later.

"Tablet computing is a segment of the market that's relevant, absolutely," Bradley said.
The current remaining 16GB $99 and 32GB $149 TouchPads have been selling like hotcakes since HP began its fire sale on them after announcing that it was pulling out of the webOS device business. If HP does decide to bring back the TouchPad, that could squash any rumors of Samsung's interest in webOS.

According to a study released by J.D. Power, in six different geographical regions Verizon was ranked best in all regions except for North Central (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin) where it fell to second behind U.S. Cellular.

Now in its ninth year, the semiannual study has been expanded in 2011 to collect evaluations from wireless customers’ most recent usage activities in three areas that impact the network performance: calling, messaging and data. Overall network performance is based on 10 problem areas that impact the customer experience: dropped calls; calls not connected; audio issues; failed/late voicemails; lost calls; text transmission failures; late text message notifications; Web connection errors; email connection errors; and slow downloads. Network performance issues are measured as problems per 100 (PP100) network connections, where a lower score reflects fewer problems and better network performance. Carrier performance is examined in six regions: Northeast; Mid-Atlantic; Southeast; North Central; Southwest; and West.

For a 14th consecutive reporting period, Verizon Wireless ranks highest in the Northeast region. Verizon Wireless achieves fewer customer-reported problems with dropped calls, initial connections, transmission failures and late text messages, compared with the regional averages. Verizon Wireless also ranks highest in the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, Southwest and West regions.

In the North Central region, U.S. Cellular ranks highest for a 12th consecutive reporting period. Compared with the regional average, U.S. Cellular has fewer customer-reported problems with dropped calls, failed initial connections, audio problems, failed voice mails and lost calls.

Steve Jobs is resigning as CEO of Apple effective immediately. Tim Cook formerly COO will be replacing him as CEO. No reason was given on why Steve Jobs is quitting.

UPDATE - Steve Jobs provided the following letter to the company:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

While not yet officially requested, the Wall Street Journal reports that Verizon would like to see president Obama step in and override any import restrictions made by the ITC against consumer wireless devices:

But another peculiarity of the ITC is that its rulings can be waived by the president. Verizon thinks it would be great if President Obama, in a blanket statement, made clear he would not let stand any decision blocking importation of consumer wireless devices. The parties then would have to recur to normal patent litigation, and whatever rights and wrongs are discovered could be settled by exchanges of cash. Mobile is a rare industry exhibiting growth, job creation and animal spirits. Who needs a paralyzing meltdown?
Do you think this would be a good or bad thing? Is it right for a device to be outright banned from import instead of settling through other means? Especially considering that Samsung Galaxy phones sales may be banned in the EU?

On Monday during a trial before the International Trade Commission, Microsoft requested that the ITC halt the import of certain Motorola smartphones running Android that it believes infringe on seven of its patents.

“We have a responsibility to our employees, customers, partners and shareholders to safeguard our intellectual property,” David Howard, Microsoft’s corporate vice president and deputy general counsel for litigation, said in an e-mail. “Motorola is infringing our patents and we are confident that the ITC will rule in our favor.”
    Motorola's response:

Motorola Mobility is “vigorously defending” itself “against Microsoft’s patent attack business strategy,” Jennifer Erickson, a Motorola Mobility spokeswoman, said in an e-mail. “We have also brought legal actions of our own in the U.S. and in Europe to address Microsoft’s large scale of infringement of Motorola Mobility’s patents.”
A ruling in the case is expected early November.
