Bell & Telus Defend Dealings with Huawei

In Vancouver Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou remains under house arrest, facing extradition to the United States. In mainland China Canadian citizens continue to be detained—with one previously-convicted individual facing a sudden retrial and resulting, perhaps arbitrary, death sentence. In this tense and escalating climate two of our Big Three carriers are taking steps to defend their use of Huawei infrastructure and handsets.

Mobile Syrup reported over the weekend that some 30,000 Telus employees have received an internal memo from VP Eros Spadotto (great mob boss name, btw) detailing the innovative-centric (?) partnership between Telus and their Chinese equipment supplier:

"Huawei remains a viable and reliable participant in the Canadian telecommunications space, bolstered by globally leading innovation, comprehensive security measures, and new software upgrades."
Now another memo has leaked from Bell, instructing customer-facing employees to defend the carrier's sales of Huawei-made handsets:

“The debate around Huawei involves the potential use of its wireless infrastructure equipment in new 5G wireless networks, which have yet to be launched. There are no concerns about the Huawei smartphones offered to Canadian consumers by Virgin Mobile/Bell and most other wireless providers.”
While it would be nice to have the full text of these memos for context, one should still be able to appreciate the predicament that Bell and Telus are in, sharing infrastructure and, at least with Telus, a billion-dollar investment in Huawei 5G gear. It seems inevitable to me that Canada will follow the lead of other Five Eyes partners (most notably the US) and ban Huawei from our networks, sooner rather than later. That's bad news for Bell and Telus, but I imagine not quite so bad as being detained in a foreign country.

It wasn’t that long ago that Google would partner with an Android OEM to release a high end phone priced hundreds cheaper than similarly spec’d phones. However, since then Google has shifted strategies and began designing their own Android phones.

They’ve followed a similar strategy that Apple and Samsung have been using by releasing a regular sized version; the Pixel and a larger Phablet; the Pixel XL.

The line is now in their 3rd generation. Let’s check out the Pixel 3. ...

I'm not sure exactly when 30-day BYOD contracts became exempt from the customary grandfathering that wireless subscribers are used to; maybe this is it?

Customers who jumped on late 2017's 10GB holiday miracle here in Canada are about to get a $5 price increase, to $65/month. Cash-grabs so far have confirmed from Bell, Virgin, Rogers and Fido. If you think that Telus and Koodo will inevitably join in you're probably not wrong.

For Fido and Rogers the new rate is already in effect, as of January 3rd. Bell and Virgin are holding off until March—but according to iPhone in Canada (who also whipped up the fancy lead graphic at the top of this post) Bell is also planning to apply the $5 price hike to all of their BYOD plans.

So what can you do? Someone on Red Flag Deals managed to get a 3GB bonus by calling in to Fido to complain. Your mileage may vary, as they say, and there's no guarantee that this extra data will be permanent.

Notice how I didn't say "best"... the fact of the matter is that of Taiwan's four national carriers—Chunghwa Telecom, FarEasTone, Taiwan Mobile and T Star—I've only ever used FarEastTone. And none of their SIM cards in my growing collection has ever let me down.

If you're flying into Terminal 1 of Taoyuan International Airport you'll find counters for all four carriers just outside of immigration (to the right). But if you're flying into the yet-to-be-made-over Terminal 2 then you'll have to hunt down each one separately. I'm happy to save you that trouble: FarEastTone provides prepaid data SIMs charged by volume or by day, and you'll definitely want to choose the former because data is unlimited, and cheap! 5 days of service will set you back a mere $350 TWD, about $11 and change USD; my girlfriend and I got 15 full days for exactly $32.03 CAD each.

Speeds, as you can see from my collection of tests above, were fine—maybe not as fast as peak 4G speeds on Bell in downtown Toronto, but perfectly usable. And because of the unlimited throughput I never once had to connect to hotel WiFi.

So if there's a trip to Taiwan in your near future and you require a prepaid SIM then I think you'll be quite satisfied with FarEastTone. More on them and your other options at the links immediately below.

Shortly after Christmas I'll be taking my annual winter break, this year touring the western coast of Taiwan. A couple of people that I know have expressed concern that I'll be snatched up like the other three Canadians caught up in this unfortunate Huawei mess. I feel like there's a teachable moment here, so let me gather my notes as I step up to the rostrum.

[clears throat] Taiwan is not China. But it also is.

The island has seen a steady influx of Han Chinese since the 1600s. But the most notable migration came in 1949 as the Kuomintang (KMT), defeated in the civil war by the Communist Party of China (CPC), fled mainland China and set up a government-in-exile in Taiwan.

Where the confusion stems from is an agreement signed by The Republic of China (Taiwan ROC) and the People's Republic of China (China PRC). Here's Wikipedia on the 1992 Consensus, or One-China Principle:

Under this "consensus", both governments "agree" that there is only one single sovereign state encompassing both mainland China and Taiwan, but disagree about which of the two governments is the legitimate government of this state.
The confusion is compounded by Taiwan ROC not having a seat in the United Nations (the PRC does), and by the likes of Air Canada and Marriott Hotels bowing to mainland pressure and listing Taiwanese destinations as part of the PRC. But make no mistake; Taiwan ROC is a sovereign democratic nation, with its own currency, immigration and military forces.

It's also home to Acer, ASUS, HTC and bubble tea.

I should be home and back on regular duties as of Thursday, January 17th. Have a safe and happy holiday, and I'll see you in 2019!

The CRTC released its 2018 Communications Monitoring Report yesterday (direct link to the 34 page PDF right here), and we already have an expert reaction to it, from Dr. Michael Geist:

The data points to a market dominated by three big carriers, with retail pricing that creates all the wrong incentives for a country focused on innovation. Rather than encouraging data use, the current marketplace forces consumers to ration their data and to subscribe to cheaper data plans with the hope of not running into overage charges.
He's not wrong; I had a quick look through the report myself, and found this graphic to be especially telling:

I'm thinking that 5G is going to be a really tough sell in this country if over half of its mobile subscribers have a monthly data bucket of 2GB or less.

It could be that we're just a nation of cheapskates, who simply don't see much value in mobile data. But the long lines at carrier stores for that 10GB holiday miracle this time last year would seem to suggest otherwise.

I'm not talking about luxury brands retreating to Wear OS to fend off the Apple Watch, though there will certainly be more of those... I'm talking about two famous brands that will be going smart their own way. Kinda.

Wareable has a new feature on what's in the pipeline for 2019. I've cut out the cruft and cut to the chase!

    1. Swatch

The cheap and cheerful watchmaker has been taking its sweet time (sorry) with its in-house smartwatch platform, Swiss OS. In the works since 2017, Swatch is now saying that it will come to market early next year. The two big draws? Long battery life and "Swiss vault-grade" data protection. Mmkay.

    2. Timex

This seems less like vapourware to me, since (1) Timex is already making hybrid watches, and (2) they're partnering with Huami for their first proper smartwatch venture. I remain a big fan of my Amazfit Bip, and even if Huami slaps a Timex logo on a new model that'll probably suffice for me.

If you're more interested in reading how BMW, Puma and other brands will be jumping off a cliff with Wear OS, check the link immediately below.

As a third Canadian citizen has now been detained in China, in what is almost certainly a tit-for-tat response to the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver, I feel compelled to write something about this escalating and nasty situation we seem to have gotten ourselves into. It's a complicated issue, to be sure, so I'm going to try my best to stick to the facts.

FACT: Canada is not America's stooge.

The demands to free Huawei's CFO fail to recognize this country's rule of law. Canada has a long-standing extradition treaty with the United States, and we had a legal obligation to make the arrest on their behalf.

FACT: Other parties have violated sanctions without facing arrest.

Meng and Huawei aren't the only parties guilty of violating U.S. sanctions against Iran. As discussed in a recent episode of the CANADALAND Short Cuts podcast, up to five financial institutions in North America have violated of these same sanctions:

    Bank of America
    HSBC
    ING
    JP Morgan Chase
    Toronto Dominion Bank

At present I can only confirm HSBC and Iran. But if even they're the only other guilty party here, where are the arrests at HSBC? Just something to keep in mind when we get to the end of this.

FACT: The feared "backdoor" in Huawei equipment has yet to be proven.

The usually media-shy Chinese company has issued a public challenge to prove that there's a security risk present in their equipment. While it is true that Nortel was at least partly undone by corporate espionage at the hands of Chinese hackers, to my knowledge there has been no direct link to Huawei.

OBSERVATION: We seem to have conveniently forgotten Snowden.

Mising in almost every discussion of Huawei are the 2013 revelations of Edward Snowden. Whether you think he's a hero or a traitor, no one has denied the warrantless surveillance that he revealed to the world only a few years ago.

I'm not saying that China's spying is better or worse, only that we've got some backdoor issues of our own.

OPINION: This is as much about preserving the tech hegemony as anything else.

If you're seeking for a wider perspective on this story I would recommend looking beyond Canada and the United States. Here, for example, is an instructive video from DW News:

The gist of the interview presented here is that there is unquestionably a trade component in play. China continues to rise as a formidable tech power in the wider world, and the United States has a lot of its own interests to protect. Exactly how much this factored into the Huawei extradition request, that's the billion dollar question.

This week CNET is taking a trip down memory lane, with a feature article and companion video (above) about the iconic Moto Razr.

The video is definitely worth a watch, as it features Paul Pierce, who was on the design team for Moto back in the day. What made the RAZR so impossibly thin was a new (at the time) chipset that allowed the circuit board and battery to exist on the same physical plane. But the phone was so thin that its chunky chin was almost a necessity, to give the user something to hold on to while texting on the flush keypad.

The article is a bit more of a fluff piece, with the author lamenting how he didn't "get" the appeal of the Razr when it was first released. There is, however, one quote that speaks to the lasting impact of Motorola's most famous creation:

It took the iPhone's introduction in 2007 to really kill it.
For what it's worth, I can recall being tasked to find a Razr for a friend in the mid-2000s. They were so popular at the time that the only unit I could procure was a grey market import from Spain. I distinctly remember spending an afternoon trying to figure out how to switch the menus to English. Good times...

    1. Parkland Mall
    2. Bower Place

And here's the coverage map plus the five planned store locations in Victoria:

    1. Westshore Town Centre
    2. Mayfair Shopping Centre
    3. Uptown
    4. Hillside Shopping Centre
    5. The Bay Centre

There's also some new coverage in the works for Ontario. Look for a 4G signal in the following cities:

    1. Belleville
    2. Brockville
    3. Cobourg
    4. Cornwall
    5. Pembroke

... Just not until March of next year.

You may have noticed the deals on Fitbit's answer to the Apple Watch this holiday season. For example, Amazon.com is currently listing the Versa Special Edition (the one with Fitbit Pay) for $179 USD, almost $60 off the list price of $229.95. And for Canadians, Amazon.ca is listing the same model for $229.95 CAD, a full $70 off its regular $299.95

    So what's the catch?

Well, if you're on iOS by all accounts you should be fine, but if you're phone is of the Android variety then maybe keep your expectations low. I've already posted about my own experience with the Versa and my OnePlus 5T—mine went straight back to Best Buy after notifications failed and failed hard.

And it's not just me. From a recent thread on the Fitbit subreddit:

I bought the Versa direct from Fitbit when it first came out. I paired with my Oneplus 3T and have always had problems with it. I would conservatively say 75% of the time the watch was not syncing or sending over ANY notifications.
Granted, the OnePlus 3T isn't an officially supported Android device—nor was my 5T, for that matter. So which Android phones are supported? Less than you might think. Buried deep in Fitbit's help pages is a listing of currently compatible Android hardware. From this page find the section Which Devices Are Compatible With the Fitbit app? and then expand the sub-heading marked Android devices.

One of the phones listed as "fully compatible" is this year's Pixel 3—which this same redditor tried to use with his Versa:

I recently bought a Pixel 3 which, by definition, runs stock Android OS. Again, watch doesn't sync, watch doesn't show ANY notifications. I have a 100% notification and sync rate with my Pebbles and Wear OS. Fitbit BOUGHT Pebble but they can't figure out bluetooth/syncing/notifications.
I do find myself missing the great experience I had with the Versa and Fitbit Pay. But every time I'm tempted to buy, I have another look at that reddit thread and talk myself out of it. If you're also an Android user, maybe you should do the same.
