• Apple To Adopt RCS Next Year

In a surprising move, Apple has announced today that it will adopt the RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging standard. The feature will launch via a software update “later next year” and bring a wide range of iMessage-style features to messaging between iPhone and Android users.
Apple’s decision comes amid pressure from regulators and competitors like Google and Samsung. It also comes as RCS has continued to develop and become a more mature platform than it once was.

I fail to see the need for this.

Most people use another app anyways like WhatsApp. I don't think carriers will like this as it will likely give them an additional excuse to raise rates. In North America, around 80% of teens use an iPhone and more want a new one. Whats App is definitely big in other countries where the iPhone isn't dominant. I doubt iPhone and Android users will give up their WhatsApp (although I wish they would including all Meta products).

I think it's more likely due to expected EU regulation that'll force the change for them - similar to USB-C.
