• Pixel 4a Now Available for Pre-order

Maybe it's just the COVID talking, but 2020's Pixel 4a is reminding me a lot of 2013's Nexus 5, though I suppose 2012's Nexus 4 would be a better comparison—not only do the numbers match up better, but the Nexus 4 didn't have LTE, just as the Pixel 4a is similarly missing 5G.

But not for long: According to The Verge a 5G-enabled 4a will launch alongside the Pixel 5 later this year. For now though, let's peruse the specs of the 4G-only 4a:

    5.81 inch FHD+ always-on OLED display @ 443 ppi
    Snapdragon 730 processor
    6 GB RAM / 128 GB storage
    12.2 MP dual-pixel rear camera / 8 MP punch-hole selfie cam
    3140 mAh battery
Stereo speakers / 3.5 mm audio jack (!)
Android 10 / "Just Black" colourway
    Price: $349 USD / $479 CAD

Glass sandwiches be damned, I'm totally down for a sub-$500 CAD phone with a decent camera. If you're in the same boat you can pre-order yours at the first link below.

Well you can buy the Samsung S10E, also with no 5G, for just a tad over $400. Wireless charging, Micro SD card slot, Snapdragon 855, and MST. Also 6GB/128GB. But no dual SIM.

Not sure I'd spend $349 for a Snapdragon 730 phone with no wireless charging and no MicroSD card slot.

Getting the Samsung S10E for around $400 is a little convoluted, but I did it.

$683.93 (retail)-$334.34 ($20 sitewide discount - $200 trade-in for iPhone 6s - $83.94 bundle discount - $30.40 employee/student/first responder discount + $54.39 to buy a Tracfone refurbished iPhone 6s with $20 plan (with two discounts applied). Total of $403.98. I sent in the Tracfone refurbished iPhone 6s and Samsung accepted it. The discounts go up and down over time so YMMV. The S10E is a great, smallish phone, far better than the new iPhone SE.

I predict it will be a popular choice for many with good sales.

The stock android experience is a draw. Like the stereo speakers. Lack of 5G wouldn’t deter

me as It seems it will be a few years before it’s fully deployed and integrated. Screen size

is fairly ideal. Like the weight of 5.04 oz. Pocket carry is easy. Has all the bands needed.

      That’s my 2 cents.

It lacks a host of features. Besides the poorer CPU and modem it has fewer LTE bands. No waterproofing. No MicroSD card slot. No wireless charging. 2x2 MIMO. No Wi-Fi 6 (ax). At least it has eSIM plus physical SIM support.

One is much safer if a freeze is in place because why would a hacker bother when 99% are easier targets because they are unfrozen. Unless it's personal that's the way it is.
