• Bell Lights up 5G in Select Markets

Looks like Bell has beat out Telus to become the second Big Three carrier to offer 5G service in Canada. As of this morning that service is now live in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal. Never mind that this country's official 5G spectrum auction has been postponed until 2021; Bell is using their existing AWS spectrum to bring 5G to their customers right now—provided, of course, that they're using one of the three currently-supported handsets:

LG V60 ThinQ 5G Dual Screen
    Motorola Edge+
    Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G

If you've got one of these devices (and live in one of the aforementioned markets) you can enjoy free access to Bell's fifth generation wireless service... until March of 2021, when the privilege will set you back an additional $10 CAD/month.

$10 more/mo? no thanks; 4G LTE is plenty fast for me.

LG and Motorola will provide the fastest speeds based on combos supported. Realistically, this 5G deployment will provide same peak speeds as existing LTE. I would wait for n78 deployment, which will be 1 year from now.

Anyone know if Bell is refarming their AWS-1 for 5G or using AWS-3? Or is it DSS? I'm holding out a little bit on getting a 5G phone so I can't check unfortunately. Also interesting the three other markets than Toronto are all Telus RAN, I'm guessing Bell and Telus still plan on sharing their radio network for 5G?

It's 10 MHz of AWS-3 for NR only, no DSS. You're correct about the markets. That means Telus is not far behind to launch.

Exciting news! Has anybody tested speeds?

Do LG and Motorola support better CA combos or can they do higher order MIMO? You would think Samsung would have taken the crown for top speed.

Exactly this. Especially with the pathetically small data buckets in Canada... Zero point to paying extra for this.

Samsung only anchors on B13. So the LTE part is worse. LG and Moto can use the regular 2-4-7-7 LTE combo plus NR. I think anchor options are 2 or 7.

I've seen 1 Gbps, but it's not easy to do. Usually it's the same result 4G vs. 5G.

Sorry, is that 1Gbps on 5G only using 10MHz of AWS-3???

Also, what is the latency like?
    1. sheytoon's Avatar
      sheytoon -
Speed is achieved with dual connectivity of LTE + NR. About 85% of the speed is from 65 MHz LTE and 15% is from 10 MHz NR. In terms of spectral efficiency, 4G and 5G are similar at the moment.

Latency is in the 10-15 ms range.Attachment 166152

That's annoying. I thought they said it would be free for a year. Have you tried calling in to ask?

No i didn't :/ I also thought it would be free for a while just to hook us on it but no we have to pay for that... 99% of people will never get this if it's not included in their plan. 99% of bell customers don't even own a 5G device

Ok guys a little update!! Called Bell this morning and ask them to activate 5G on my account, and told them it supposed to be free until March 2021. They did activate it and said i wouldn't get charge for it, only thing i needed to do was to get a 5G sim card! I just got the sim card, once activated i should get 5G in area's that are covered. Ill post my speed test later.

Good stuff, though not sure why they think you need a new SIM. The authentication is all done via LTE. I didn't change my SIM and it works fine. Either way, glad you got it sorted out.

Also for people who want 5G added to their account just go in the My Bell app and add it... You won't be charged until March of next year... 2021

Bell has now cancelled their 5G fee. This matches TELUS which stated they would not charge for 5G service.

Bell 5G Network Will Be Free in 2021 as $10/Month Fee Axed

While Bell initially said 5G network access would be a “free bonus” only until March 31, 2021, the wireless carrier now says it will no longer charge customers for access next year.

A Bell spokesperson told iPhone in Canada in a statement, “5G access is now included at no additional charge for customers with 5G-capable devices.”

Yes same thing i saw on mobile syrup...
Oh well that was the right move to make.
People were burning towers out there because of that 5G nonsense, and you wanna charge them for using these towers? [emoji1787][emoji1787]
All joke's aside, that's a really good move...
In a couple of years all phones will support 5G people won't really have a choice, and that 5G nonsense will be history...
