• Koodo's Not Entirely Terrible 10 GB BYOD Plan

If Fido and Virgin match this latest Koodo initiative—and there's no reason to think that they won't—we may have a new, slightly more affordable option for 10 GB data buckets from The Big Three. Last December's holiday miracle gave us 10 GB for $60; now it seems that Koodo is offering the same amount for $75. The details:

$75 per month + applicable monthly tab charge
    • 10 GB of Shock-Free™ data
    • Unlimited Canada-wide anytime minutes
    • Unlimited messaging (text & picture)
    • Call Display, Voicemail, Call Waiting, Conference Calling and Unlimited Canada-wide Family Calling
    • Additional data $10/100 MB
    • $35 connection fee (including SIM card) applies when purchased in store
    • $0 connection fee (including SIM card) when you order online!
    • Receive 5 GB of bonus data every month – over 24 months that represents 120 GB of bonus data. *

    * Get the $75 No Tab, Tab Small or Tab Medium plan and receive a 5 GB bonus data every month – over 24 months that represents 120 GB of bonus data.

That bit about the 120 GB of bonus data is, of course, a direct jab at Freedom. But in Koodo's case it also applies to small and medium tab plans—which, somewhat unexpectedly, are currently showing the same 10 GB / $75 per month rate.

UPDATE: According to Mobile Syrup this ends up being a 5 GB / $75 plan after 24 months—which makes zero sense, as the lower $60 per month plan would ultimately give you 1 GB more per month.

Went to a Koodo/telus store. Tried to get a phone at the store. Oddly enough, they told me there would be a connection fee of 35$ if I get a phone there at the store. But, there's no fee online. Makes no sense to me. Is this true? Or, am I getting put together.

It’s true. Connection fee is only waived when activating online.

Thanks. Decided to pay the fee because of the mail strike, and the black Friday chaos

Lol what? It's 10+5 GB so 15 GB for $75.

Sadly, it's not. Koodo has updated the fine print on their plans page to be more clear:

Limited Time Offer! Plan includes 5GB + Bonus 5GB of Data (That’s 120GB of Bonus Data over 2 years!)
      So dumb...

It makes sense to Telus's accounting department; you get more now, and in 2 years you'll have to recommit for a temporarily decent plan again (probably for more money). Meanwhile the promotional $60 6GB plan will be long gone.

Oh, it's a special offer for select existing customers; it's only there once I log in

Yeah I see it now once I log in. It indeed needs to be on a small, med or large tab.

I also got the 3GB/$10 or 10GB/$15 add on offer a couple weeks ago. I already have the 5GB SK plan so that was a better deal for me 15GB for $63...with $10/GB overage charges.

I don't know when/if this changed, but from koodomobile.com's fine print:

There was "breaking news" on Global (Shaw) that Freedom was offering 100 GB. They wondered how the other carriers would react.

It looks like Koodo said "We'll see your 100GB and raise you 20."

I'm waiting for Global to update.
