• A Lot of iPhones are, Officially, Coming to Freedom Mobile

    Mobile Syrup has a pretty big scoop this morning: they've been able to confirm that Freedom Mobile will start carrying the iPhone in-store as of December 8th. And not cast-off refurbished hardware, either—the carrier will offer new stock and the full complement of 2017's iPhone 8, 8 Plus and iPhone X.

    In Western Canada there will be even more Apple product to choose from; because FM is already running their 2500MHz spectrum in that part of the country the iPhone 6, 6s, 6s Plus, SE, 7 and 7 Plus will be available on the same date. Those same devices will be available in Eastern Canada once that spectrum gets lit up in early 2018.

    Canadians who finance their smartphone purchases (ie. most of us) stand to reap some considerable savings over 24 months, as all iPhones will be $0 down. Check the link below for details on that.

    It will be interesting to see what Apple's iconic smartphone can do for Freedom's subscriber numbers and, if there ends up being a big influx of new users, whether or not FM's young LTE network can handle it.

      The zero dollar offerings will certainly tempt a lot of people, but I suspect the crappy price plans will promptly turn many off again - I still think the big gig plans are dumb.

      One thing they had going for themselves was price differentiation, and now that’s gone – a lot of people won’t bite anymore.

      Disagree. Last time I checked. Big 3 offering $100/mth for 1-2GB. Plus hundreds up front for whatever iPhone you want. Freedom is the same price but $0 up front, and tons more data.

      The gigs are certainly attractive and far better vs big3, I agree....but I don't think that, and that alone will tempt everyone. A lot of people smart enough to actually understand the roaming implications (and limitations) as well as the PPU talk minutes (still the biggest joke) will have second thoughts.

      The doughhead "OMGZ MORE GIGZ LOLZ!!1!" crowd won't care as we know none of them read beyond the first 4 words of anything they do anyways, so they'll sign up and find out the limitations later and then rush online to complain...because it's someone else's fault at that point.

      Kind of figured Wind was going to get the Iphone. Some said they wouldn't because of their network not being good. But Apple sales must not have been all that great for their new lineup of phones. So they had to expand their market. This is what I was thinking would happen.

      I hope now Shaw starts deploying their new spectrum fast and give people a good option to quit the Big 3.

      Yes It's crazy, Big 3 will have to give some crazy deals on the iphone for Boxing Day. Better than what they have done in the past IMO.

      This is way better than anything Videotron has ever done in Quebec. Actually Videotron has been gradually raising their prices so they can offer lower upfront costs on premium devices.

      And Iphone 8 started at $329 with a $98 9GB plan. The iphone now is $199 with the same plan but that may just be a Black Friday deal.

      I just priced out an iPhone 8 on Fido;

      10Gb with unlimited minutes (granted, the bucket is nationwide) for $145/mo PLUS $429 up front for the iPhone.

      Compare the everywhere $60 which has unlimited voice in home zones, and 2400 minutes outside, And 10Gb in with 500 outside, with a $15 tab boost and you get $75/mo. WITHOUT ANY OVERAGE CHARGES...

      If they push this angle, there will be plenty of entitled children with new IP8's this Christmas....

      As well as many grownups...

      Edit;

      It's $1 more with Koodo...

      Freedom is now selling the iPhone because their network is now LTE and the frequency bands are now compatible. Also the iPhone X is selling like hot cakes.

      Man this offer is enticing. Maybe its time to dump Fido and go with Freedom on the iphone X? My nexus's battery is toast and its a good time for a change!

      I've used it. I don't get why this bothers people. Inside 5 or 10 minutes you don't even notice it anymore.

      Once a droid phone does the same thing, magically it won't be such a big issue anymore for a lot of people.

      People wondered why Freedom's plans went from fantastic pricing on a so-so network to crappy on a still so-so network - now you know why.

      They're giving a massive Tab to new customers who are then going to complain incessantly when things don't work smoothly.

      iPhone customers are getting a $23 per month free subsidy from Freedom, so now instead of having roaming plans that are good, they've neutered roaming to pay for iPhones.

      What's the subsidy on a Pixel or any other Android device? They'd be giving away a lot of phones if a $50 plan comes with a free $569 phone.

      I have to agree here. The iPhone is more than likely the MAIN reason we saw the plan price bump with the Big Gig plans. I'm starting to wonder if they aren't being told by Apple that they have to heavily subsidise iPhones, comparing these new iPhone subsidies to the Android devices, the difference is quite drastic. The subsidy model itself bothers me, I would rather pay off my phone with 0% financing or one outright payment then have to pay more $ a month to pay for other people's devices

      I think it has to do with Apple sales quotas.

      I remember years ago when Sprint was giving out iPhones like candy just so they could hit a minimum number of sold units that Apple was demanding of them.... way back in the iPhone 4/4S days

      The good news is that iPhone supply is going to drastically increase in the Canadian market and the reseller market prices will drop as well. Everyone wins as far as I see it.

      Considering these are all unlocked units, might be worth taking that subsidy after paying off a few tabs and selling them at a profit as brand new in box units if they can be bought with a grandfathered Everywhere $50 plan.

      It will be unlocked after DEC 1st

      "When December 1 rolls around, a CRTC mandate will require all cellphones to be sold unlocked in Canada, while fees to unlock existing devices will also be banned.

      According to a leaked document from retailer WOW! Mobile, seen by MobileSyrup, older iPhones in Canada will “automatically be unlocked over-the-air effective December 1st,” by Apple."

      They aren't available until December 8th, so they'll be unlocked out of the box anyways
