• The Internet Reacts to Apple's New Smart Battery Case

Yesterday Apple quietly released this $99 USD Smart Battery Case for the iPhone 6 and 6s. Or so they thought.

In short order the Internet was all over this, and with good reason: the thing is hideous. Honestly, would anyone buy this over a Mophie juice pack just because of the Apple logo on the back?

It's a rare misstep for a company that prides itself on design, devoting entire videos to components used in their products and how they fit together. Sure, it's only an accessory, but by Apple's own high standards I'd have expected them to come up with a more elegant solution than this.

And with that I present to you, the scorn of the Internet!

I work in an office setting with around 50 people and it is almost comical to hear the daily chatter as people search for an iPhone charger. I think it is actually part of the appeal to the iPhone generation--social sharing of chargers brings them together with something to actually talk about.

I figured if Apple came out with a battery case that the bottom wouldn't be so tall - like Spigen's QI charger case for the iPhone. Instead it's just as tall as any other iPhone battery case.

"Charge your iPhone and battery case simultaneously for increased talk time up to 25 hours, Internet use up to 18 hours on LTE, and even longer audio and video playback.* With the Smart Battery Case on, the intelligent battery status is displayed on the iPhone Lock screen and in Notification Center, so you know exactly how much charge you have left."

But it's SMART. Who could hate that?

I have more of a problem with the price than I do about the design. That said, if Apple wasn't so obsessed with "thinness," something like this wouldn't be entirely necessary.

Agree 100%!! Why are they so obsessed with making a paper thin device? If they kept it at 8 or 9 mm, the battery would last twice as long and nobody would need external battery packs or cases.

Because Apple's execs are held captive in an Ive-ry tower.

Good thing they've given him other things to do now other than "design" software.

Next step -- the people responsible for iTunes need to be fired.

It's a case with a battery what's the big deal. Lots of haters when you're number one.

Well, that's going to be a problem for me considering that my iPhone is already in a wallet case nor does it address the fact that I already have either the Samsung Galaxy S6 or BB Passport on me. Even though the battery case is convenient on a device I use everyday I would rather find ways to free up pocket space.
