• Rooted Alcatel One Touch Fierce Video Review

    EDIT: See Camera fixes below!

This is my review of the Alcatel One Touch Fierce, a low cost smartphone that doesn't feel or act like a low cost smartphone. This can be had for as low as $29.99 on MetroPCS, or for around $100.00 on T-Mobile(U.S. prices). It can be unlocked to work on many U.S.A. GSM carriers as well(ebay has an unlock code for around $5.00...or you can use one from the advertisers on here).
But what I really like about this phone is how easy it is to root. I used the Framaroot app to do it in literally one step. It doesn't get any easier than that! Just use the Faramir exploit from it's list of exploits and your good to go. All works just as it would if you didn't root it, but it allows you to use all of the great root apps out there, like Greenify.

As for the specs, this is one amazing phone for $30.00...it sports a nice Mediatek MT6589M quad core processor with a equally nice PowerVR SXG544MP gpu. Plenty of power for doing just about anything you want to do on a smartphone, from surfing to gaming, all works well here. It has a good sized 4.5" TFT 540x960 pixel screen that looks great and works fine. It is also running a clean install of Jellybean, 4.2.2. Just a few T-Mobile apps are added, nothing more, nice. It does have a pair of cameras, a VGA front facing one and a 5MP rear facing one with flash...but neither are anything to write home about. I'm actually surprised it even has a front facing one for the price, many at this price point eliminate that option to save a few bucks. Unfortunately the rear camera is fixed focus, which limits it's use to simply taking pics, you can't scan bar codes(see below for fix!) or checks with it. The pics have a soft focus to them as well, but it does sport some decent post processing software to fix them up enough for social media use, so it's not totally useless.

All told, this is an amazing phone for the price. It allows for rooting easily, unlock's easily to allow it to be used on many U.S.A. GSM carriers, and the good specs and usefulness don't make you feel like you got a throwaway phone, just a nice, easy to use smartphone for next to no cash at all. Highly recommended!

EDIT: Camera apps that really improve the cameras ability to focus(for scanning codes)and zoom:
    Better Camera: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...e.bettercamera
    Camera Zoom: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...camerazoomfree

Here are the links to both where you can buy this(I'll add more as I find better deals)as well as the link for Framaroot. Remember to download that app directly to your phone(from it's browser) and then install it and run it to get it to work with the Faramir exploit.

    To root your phone:
    Framaroot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2130276

Some rooting basics for those who have never done it:
Never update your phone with a phone company supplied update if the phone is rooted, this can and will most likely end up with your phone being bricked. Always unroot your phone before you do said update, then re-root after your done.
It's always best to wait awhile after a phone has been out to see if others have rooted it successfully, don't be a guinea pig, money doesn't grow on trees ;-)
Lastly, not all rooting schemes work all the time, even on the same phones. Firmware differences, the time the phone was made(different times of the year), lots of things can affect how your phone reacts to rooting. It's never, ever set in stone. As with all rooting, your taking a chance in trying it out, there's no guaranty it's gonna work so proceed at your own risk!

Here are some pics I took with the 5MP camera and fixed up a bit with the internal image manipulation software(closeup's aren't this phones forte, but it's better after around 2 feet or so):

Anyone having any luck with setting up Google Voice voicemails on this phone? I can't seem to switch the voicemail carrier on the phone from MetroPCS, even though I had unlocked it and have been using the phone with Lycamobile. How can I change this settings so that Google Voice handles all of my voicemail? This is really the only thing I'm not happy with this phone; everything else have been working great.

Btw, you can root the phone with Framaroot (google "Framaroot XDA", download the .apk install file with your phone browser, install it, and follow its direction; its so ridiculously easy it's not even funny). I have also bought a screen protector for the phone at Xtremeguard, where you can get 90% off with the coupon code "90off2" (no quotation).

I also unlocked the phone with a code from eBay (google "Unlock metroPCS Alcatel OneTouch Fierce OT-7024N Unlocking Code Fast") and a non-metroPCS microSIM (I only used a H2O Mobile SIM, which worked fine). I also bought a rough-textured case on eBay for really cheap, though it's shipped from China so I probably have to wait for a while for it to get here (google "Frosted Matte Quicksand Textured Hard Case Cover for Alcatel One Touch Fierce" if you want to know more).

All in all, I spent a total of less than $60 for a fully-equipped, rooted, and unlocked quad-core(!) phone, which is an absolute steal esp. since I'm a broke college student. It's running like a dream too, compared to my old HTC Status/Chacha, which was the definition of POS (really, there was hardly a day where it didn't give me the low-storage error, even after I trimmed it to only the essential apps). BTW, for those of you lamenting the lack of custom ROM, google "Xposed Framework" and have fun with it. My Fierce is so highly customized to the point that I don't even need a new ROM. The light modding by Alcatel probably helps too.

Edit: it really sucks not being able to post links on here for a new member, and HF only waited til I pressed the submit button to tell me that!

To set up voicemail to go to Google Voice, you have two choices

      1) Remove voicemail on MetroPCS by calling them. Then after 25 seconds, any unanswered call will go to Google Voice. However, there will be no voicemail if someone calls you directly on the MetroPCS number

      2) The Google Voicemail is set to go to voicemail after 25 seconds. Extend the seconds to wait for voicemail on MetroPCS to above 25 seconds by sending GSM commands. There are some posts about doing that for GSM phone. If I remember correctly it is under the H2O forum. The same procedure might work for Alcatel One Touch Fierce under MetroPCS as well.

Hey all, just an FYI, I'm still waiting on my phone, it should be here in the next couple of days. When I get it, I plan on unlocking it and setting it up with Straight Talk (Metro doesn't have coverage in my area) Dragon, if you don't mind, I may need to contact you about some of the things on your video. I like that root thing you talked about, but I'm a cell phone novice and really don't know much about anything. So, if you don't mind, maybe PM back/forth or something. Let me know. Thanks!

It's one of the simpler phones to root and dragon did great job with that tutorial.

      Hi Hindolam,

Thanks for taking time to help me out. When you said that I can remove MetroPCS voicemail by calling them, were you referring to the MetroPCS customer service?

I'm also not quite clear on the setting MetroPCS wait to above 25 seconds. Does that mean doing so would make my Google Voice voicemail to come earlier than the MetroPCS one? If so, what happens during those 25 seconds before the Google Voice voicemail is triggered? Does the 25 seconds refer to the wait time that the caller have to go through?

Also, I tried to search for threads with Google Voice voicemail under the H2O Wireless forum and only came up with the thread titled "Disable H2O Voicemail?" (google "Disable H2O Voicemail? howardforums" for more details as I can't post links). Is this what you were referring to for the GSM command? If so I will try it tonight on my phone and hoping it doesn't break anything.

Okay I just called MetroPCS Customer Service and they told me that since I'm not registered for service at MetroPCS, I should talk to my current provider since they are the one managing my voicemail. Is this true? I'm contacting Lycamobile to see what they have to say.

I need help with this unlocking thing. I'm reading people are using places on ebay for this. When I look on ebay, all I see are places where one can "bid" to get the code. Am I missing something? Can someone recommend someone or somewhere to get this phone unlocked?

Just to keep everyone updated, my phone is lost in transit somewhere. It was sent to me from Englewood, FL. From there it went to Jacksonville, FL. Then, for some strange reason it went back to Englewood and the back to Jacksonville. This was a 4 day trip.....so far. But rest assure, once I get it I'll do what I can and give you all an update! Thanks for everything so far!

Update: I got my phone finally! (yay!) and I now have it successfully unlocked. (Thanks for the info SnowyWhite!) I'm planning on using Straight Talk, already have their sim card in the phone. Now just waiting for Google Voice and Straight Talk to port the number over. Then, I'll be rooting the phone per the video that started this thread! (if you haven't watched it, it's awesome!).

One thing though, I'm ready different places that say I have to change/update an APN # in order for all the Straight Talk services to work? Has anyone ran into this issue?

First of all---congrats on finally getting the phone in! Good things come to those who wait
I've never used Straight Talk, so I can't help you there, sorry. I'm sure someone here can help you though. Massive thanks to SnowyWhite for all of her help on this thread, it's appreciated

Yes you will have to change to their apn depending on if your SIM is T-Mobile or not.
On their site they will show you the settings.

Yes, SnowyWhite helped me too and of course dragon did too by starting this thread.

UPDATE: My phone is now up and running on Straight Talk! I never did anything with Metro except purchase the phone. (BTW, I love Metro, but they do not have service in my area, the same with Tmobile). Purchased unlock code for about $3, purchased the activation SIM from ST, ported a phone number from Google Voice, everything went smoothly, no issues.

Now I have an issue with receiving picture messages and I cannot get on line to get apps. I would assume this is because of the apn settings (which I don't have a clue about). I'll go to the Straight Talk site and read up on it. BUT, for whatever reason, I'm not able to get to any setting on this phone! I'm a complete Android novice, but I'm sure the settings button is right in front of me. If anyone has any tips, place feel free to help me out.....again! This thread is GREAT! Thank you everyone!

To get into settings, simply swipe down from the top of the screen and push the button all the way to the right. Then hit the button that looks like an EQ and that's settings.
    1. Coyotex21's Avatar

I swiped down, pushed the button and a lot of stuff came up...but nothing that resembled an "EQ" at all. I closed that, lightly touched the double rectangle thingy on the bottom (to the right of the home button) and BINGO....SETTINGS! So, I just followed the instructions to set up with Straight Talk and all was going well until it said to change the MMS_APN. Ummm, there isn't any. So, I saved all the changes (or all the NEW stuff) and I still cannot access anything.

How important is this MMS_APN thing? Is it called something else on this phone?

I still cannot connect to the internet or receive picture messages. Here are my APN settings. Can someone let me know if I need to change/add/delete anything?

      Name: STRAIGHT_TALK
      APN : wap.tracfone
      APN type: default
      Proxy: <not set>
      Port: 8080
      Username: <not set>
      Password: <not set>
      Server: "Not set>
      MMSC: http://mms.tracfone.com
      MMS proxy: <not set>
      MMS port: <not set>
      MCC: 310
      MNC: 260
      Authentication type: <not set>
      APN protocol: iPv4
      APN roaming protocol: iPv4
      APN enable/disable: APN enabled
      Bearer: Unspecified

I have a choice to pick the pre-set Metro PCS settings or the setting from Straight Talk. Could it be the pre-set Metro stuff is making it so I cannot do anything with another carrier? Also, the Metro setting are greyed out and I can't change them. I haven't tried to delete the entire Metro settings thingy yet. Any help would be much appreciated.

Since you got this Sim new from ST, you could use the new apn settings and your phone will get hspa since its capable of that but not LTE.
Is your SIM an at&t or T-Mobile ST SIM?
      (T-Mobile=260 in SIM
      AT&T= 410)
These were my settings when I used ST for the at&t SIM:

      Apn... tfdata
      Mmsc... http://mms-tf.net
      Mms proxy mms3.tracfone.com

Just change those and see if it works.

      ST uses two apns:

The one you have is for 2g/3g but the tfdata one is for LTE/H+. That phone can get 4g but not LTE.
