• Apple To Make Announcement Regarding Antenna Issues Today (per Senior Advisor)

    Hey guys,

I just spoke to a senior advisor at AppleCare, and I will not give out her name in case this information is wrong, but she informed me that Apple is aware of the issue, and that they will make an announcement TODAY. In some form, they will hopefully be letting us know how they will be dealing with the antenna-bridging issue.

My original intent of the call was to try to get a free bumper, since I do not mind one. Although, it seems like Apple is working on an official way of dealing with this, so she said once the announcement is out, to call them back. She also gave me a new case number that will take me directly to the senior advisors. Hopefully we will know by the end of today.

I'm right handed...so the antenna issue isn't one for me. I wouldn't mind a free bumper...or anything free from Apple.

Well, if you're right handed, wouldn't you use your left hand to hold the phone, navigate the web, download apps and music etc?

Oddly enough no, I am right handed, and I don't have an IPhone but every phone I've owned (back to Nokia 5156, Siemens S46, Samsung A650, VX9800) I have preferred using it in my right hand. For typical use I jab the keys with my right thumb, and for the VX9800's full keyboard I use both thumbs. I wonder if it's because of the gripping the phone? I mean, for writing, the main action is gripping a pen or pencil and moving it around.

I think this is weird. I really don't see how one's hand on a specific location of the phone is going to cause this much problem. I mean, people put their phones in their pants pockets, nap sacks, duffel bags, and even inside some thick walled buildings and the RF signal makes it out fairly well.

How can someones hand all of a sudden become some super RF block for a device?

it doesn't block the signal...it shorts out the antennas. In most cases that I've heard of it severely lowers the signal, but in some they aren't able to connect at all.

What happens when you bridge the gap between the different antennae, you attenuate the WCDMA signal. You're linking your WCDMA antenna to something that degrades the WCDMA signal.

I wish that they'd talked about this at the rollout, which would have made it much more of a non-issue.

I think the iPhone 4 is clear and away the very best PDA type device available, and it's a shame for its reputation to be tarnished this way.

Sorry but its CORE PDA functions - PIM its LACKING in. Pick up a 7yr old Palm device and even IT has better PIM functionality. I BLAME Apple's software engineers that still rely too heavily on external solutions since the Mac inception in-house for this.

Apple tarnished themselves. Blaming consumers for gripping incorrectly is plain stupid.

Wouldn't a small piece of clear vinyl fix the problem since it would stop the hand from shorting the antennae?

When I held a friend's iPhone 4 today it did exactly that. The phone went from five bars to none in approximately 20-30 seconds. We live about four or five blocks from the closest cell site, so reception is rarely an issue for us w/ ATT, spare the ocassional low cloud deck. I'm afraid this time Apple really did drop the football ;(.

Prom1, I totally agree-PalmOS, even 10 years ago, destroyed anything else out there now as a PDA

I'm right handed and have always used a phone in my left hand.

It should be tested. But I am not sure if it helps at all because in that frequency, your hand, that vanyl layer and, the steel antenna alltogether might create a capacitor. And as you know this capacitor is serial with the antenna and this circuit may attenuate the signal.
But if you add let say a air gap between the your hand and the antenna it would be more helpful.

I will be VERY surprised to hear an announcement from Apple about this. They hardly ever do it that way, it kind of implies an "admission of guilt". They will just quietly apply a fix, and offer one to those who have already have one. (remember the iphone charger recall/replacement)
Alternatively they may not even do anything and just release information that this is a common problem with cell phones ( nokia E71) and some Droid phones, and tell us to hold the phone "properly" like Nokia did.

If you are amenable to a new phone, it's actually a better deal to buy a package that includes a phone plus airtime. These packages are available at Tracfone's official eBay store, HSN, and QVC.
