OK, I am feeling nice today.

First thing, open up the song you want to make a ringtone in Adobe Audition/Cool Edit. I don't think you need a pic for that. Now highlight the part of the song that you want to make a ringtone. To highlight, left click and hold down the mouse button and drag. Once you have what you want highlighted, click on "Edit" at the top, and select "Copy to New." This will open the highlighted part only in a new window.

Now, more than likely, the song is too loud, so you'll need the lower the volume. You don't want to volume too loud, or it'll sound like **** on your phone and possibly blow the speaker on your phone if its awfully loud. I recommend setting to at least -6dB. So to lower the volume, click on "Effects" at the top and then select "Amplitude" and then "Normalize."

(Normalize actually takes the highest peak in the waveform and sets it to the value you specify [-6dB], and changes everything else relative to that value)

Another screen will pop up which will let you select the settings. Make it look like this....

Click "OK," and it will then analyze the song and change the volume. Now from here, if you want to get fancy, you can add effects to your ringtone or fade-in or fade out. If not, you should be ready to save then.

Click on "File" at the top, select "Save As." Keep the file name under 20 characters.

For wavs, click on the down arrow and select "ACM Waveform (*.wav)." Then click on the "Options" button. Make the settings 8Khz, 8bit, mono format. Save this format so you don't have to do this everytime.

For mp3 ringtones, select mp3 from the drop down box, click on options, and make it look like this. Mp3s must be in either 32 or 48 Kbs format (48 better quality), 8000Hz, mono format.

That's about it. Now just load them to your phone in WebJal. Sticky?????

When I try to save mp3 to the right format in Audition I do not get a format that allows 8KHz mono. The lowest 48Kbs setting I get is somewhere around 22000Hz. Is there something I am missing or another way to manually change that setting?

Thanks, Jeff

I've got a problem with Adobe Audtion. It will not let me change the sample rate to 8000. That part is grayed out??? I can change it to Mono as well as 8 bit alos.
I have tried with a couple different files (wav and mp3). Any ideas?

You mentioned to me in a thread a while back about using Audition (which I already had), and I finally tried it out a few nights ago. You were right, it works great! I saved a custom mp3 format that works with my phones every time.

From seeing your tutorial today (which is great), I see now how to normalize the audio, which I had been doing manually (guessing) for each track. One less step in the process now.

Thanks for taking the time to post that and help out.

You need to change it in the "advanced" settings, which will show up in the bottom left of the "save as" pop up box (after you click on the "advanced" button on btm rgt). Make sure you check the "save as mono" box before trying to set it to 8000, I don't think it will allow it when that box is unchecked. After you get it set up right, click the "add" button on the top to save this format for future use. (refer to Konix's post above to see the "advanced settings" area of the pop up window)

Make sure to also uncheck the "Save extra non-audio information" box when you
go to save the mp3. If you don't it will save info to the ID3 tag of the mp3. ID3 tags need to be blank/clear before loading to your phone.

konix, thank you for the tutorial, but i have one slight problem. followed every instruction to the letter, got to the save as screen, all the settings matche dthe diagram. but, the checkmark box for "convertto mono" is shaded gray, it won't let me check it off. i saved anyways, uncheck the id3 tag box, and to no surprise to anyone here it does not load, probably because it says its about 132000 bytes which is way over the memory limit. now is there anything that i in my absent mindedness might have missed.

thanks,
ulises

Humm, the only reason I can see it doing that is because the ringtone is already mono. Reopen the ringtone file in Audition. Do you see 1 wave or 2?

You could also try saving the ringtone as a full wav (44100 Khz, 16bit stereo) first, then try to resave as an mp3. See if that helps.
