The N97 is MUCH snappier after the update. I hard reset after the update (4-key method) and had 61MB free in RAM. Installed the homescreen widgets, and some oft used apps in phone memory, everything else in mass storage. Very fast now.

Funny how different some things were. Defaults always worked for me, and I can't say I really notice a difference in auto-rotate or even general speed, but then never had complaint about it either. Very interesting.

Why?
I do not have internet connection any longer. And I really would love to solve this without any resetting. Any of you had this issue after the update? If so how did you fix? I tried the setting wizard to go do its thing, but no luck.
Edit: After restarting the phone 3 times, it is fixed.

I also had to reboot my phone 2 or 3 times before the internet connected
My Google Maps is extremely faster. Especially loading up the empty (white) squares is almost immediate. And no, that "showing the home screen in landscape mode" is not fixed.

Here's something I just brought to mikealive's attention on Twitter and I'd like to bring it to your attention too. Slide open the lens cover on the camera and take notice of how fast the camera app now loads.

After this update, I've noticed my Text Messaging is acting odd.
-During a reply, it'll randomly ask if I want to save this draft and try to shut down the app.
-After sending a text, it will exit the app immmediately instead of going back to the Text Menu.
-When typing on screen, when selecting the (*) key to open symbols, it will lag and show a blank grid for a moment and then load all the symbols.
And I'm still not sure why I have 20MB of Phone Memory left. I've done the hard reset and reinstalled apps to Mass Memory. All my texts are saved on Mass Memory too as are any pics I take with the camera.

Any thoughts?
Something else is going on with your phone. Do you have any apps that are running in the background at all times? Maybe a buggy theme?

Nothing noticeable in that regard on mine..buti it didn't seem real slow previously
I haven't really noticed anything different from this firmware upgrade, but I trust that it made it better lol. I guess it was functioning well for me with V11 to not really notice any changes that was made in V12.
The major thing I want in the next firmware update is:
-Maximizing C: space. So getting rid of useless stuff (Boingo) and if possible having everything on mass memory. And reducing footprints left by apps so the C: doesn't deplete over time. And giving the option of storing cache to mass memory from the default Web Browser.
-Maximizing RAM with efficient use of RAM.
-Maximizing processor (from what I read they increased 5800XM processor speed with a FW update)
Before the update my "defaults" never worked right in the Contacts. Now it's working perfect!
This reminds me of that Chris Rock special where he says in reference to the statement "well I take care of my kids," "you're supposed to take care of your kids, what do you want? A cookie?".
