Boost FAQ

I doubt this will help as most people are too lazy to read before posting the same question that been seen 20 times already but we are going to try.

Where can I buy or sell Boost phones on this forum?
A: You can buy and sell iDen (Nextel/Boost) phones using the iDen Buy/Sell/Trade section. Please be aware of the rules when you post there, they are stickied at the top of the forum. As for CDMA Boost phones, you can find those and sell them in the Non-GSM Buy/Sell/Trade section of the forums. Again, please make yourself aware of the rules before posting an item for sale.

Service
Q: Is the service really only 50 dollars aka are there taxes or other fees involved?
A: Yes it is only 50 dollars and if you buy your Re-Boost cards online you avoid sales tax depending on your state. Some sites have 50 dollar refill cards as low as 46 dollars so keep your eyes open for those deals.

Q: Is it really unlimited?
A: While no one has been kicked off the service they expect you to use it reasonably. That means you cant place a phone call and leave it off the hook for 2 weeks straight and expect them not to consider that abnormal use. They expect to some people to use the phone as there primary phone so they as long as you dont stand out compared to everyone else in your area they should not have a problem. Example if you use 5000 minutes expect a call from boost. But if your using 3000 and all the other Heavy users are using 3000 then your fine. The same can be said for txt and web usage.

Q: Does Boost work better inside building then other providers
A: This is a matter of location location location. There are alot of variables that go into wether or not a signal can penetrate a large building. Since every DMA Market, is different any number of things could affect signal quality inside a building. Things such as freq, xmit power, distance from towers, right down to the construction of how the building was made could affect your signal. Example some houses built pre 1930s that have not been renovated ( yes there are still some around ) used Chicken wire and paster for walls before drywall was common. That will kill off almost any outside signal as it ends up forming a faraday cage that blocks all types of radio freqs.

Q: Is Boost Data as fast as XYZ provider
A: Simple answer NO. Boost is slower, iDEN Packet Data runs between 20 - 30 kbps which is much slower then what other providers are providing. It is fine for cellphone usage but you will feel the pain if you try tethering it to your computer.

Phones(Wallpapers/Ringtones/Software, etc)
Q: Can I use my unlocked GSM phone
A: NO Boost uses iDEN system, which use Motorola phones these phones are marked with an i in-front of their name example i425t , i530 , i880. Your other option is to use an iDEN based BlackBerry. iDEN Blackberry models are 6150,7510,7520,7100i,8350i

Q: Can I use a Nextel phone with Boost?
A: Maybe, if the phone has the fore ad-mentioned i in-front of the model, then the answer is yes. If the model starts with ic then the answer is no as those are the new CDMA hybrid phones which boost mobile does not support.

Q: Can I use my Nextel Sim in a Boost phone?
A: Only if you get the phone unlocked please visit the Nextel| forums for more information

Q: Where are the drivers for Motorola iDEN phones?
A: You can visit this webpage for tools and drivers for your iDEN phones http://servicemyphone.motorola.com/...areDownloads.do *Note this only for Motorola iDEN phones not iDEN based BlackBerries

Q: Where can I get a data cable?
A: Ebay will be your best bet. The motorola model number is NKN6559 search ebay there are a number of people sell orginl Motorola cables. There also many knock off cables. Most cables will go for 5 to 6 dollars USD

Q: How do I install java applications, ringtones, or wallpapers on my phone
A: By using a software application known as webjal you can load games, apps, ringers you can get webjal at http://www.harrythompson.com/troubleshooting/webjal.htm
Also be sure to check out the Nextel section of the forums, where you'll find a section dedicated to software discussion (such as webjal, java apps, etc) and the ringtones and wallpapers section, where you can find more info on ringtones and wallpapers and how to install them, etc.

Boost CDMA
Q: Does Boost offer CDMA prepaid services?
A: Yes. Visit www.BoostMobile.com to see what CDMA phones are available to start service with. Most, if not all questions related to the use of CDMA phones on Boost's CDMA service can be answered in one of two threads in this section, please visit those (and read/search first) for answers to your questions. These threads are CDMA phone activated on Boost and Boost CDMA Everything you need to know.

Blackberry
Q: Which Blackberry phones work with Boost Service?
A: The following models are iDEN based blackberries 6150,7510,7520,7100i,8350i

Q: Does Push Email/Blackberry Browser work with Boost.
A: No as there is no BIS or BES plans with Boost, though there are a few exceptions. 1. 8350i can use the Blackberry Browser via wifi connection. 2. If you have an Nextel Blackberry with an active pin subscribed to BIS or BES service then you can put a boost sim in and the phone still receive push email and Blackberry Browser, but only if the Blackberries pin is active with Nextel Servers.

There is now a way to get the Blackberry browser working. See the BoostBerry How-To sticky.

Please also check out the new BoostBerry Wiki page for more info on this topic as well.

Q: Is there any way to get Email and Web on my BlackBerry?
A: Yes by using 3rd party applications such as Gmail and Opera mini you can surf the web and check your Gmail via your blackberry.

Q: Can I download applications OTA (Over the Air ) to my Blackberry?
A: No unless you have a 8350i then you must be connected to a wifi access point to use the Blackberry Browser to initiate the installation of Blackberry apps with out having to install them via the Desktop Manager Software.

Q: Can I send and receive text with my Blackberry
A: There is now a way to get MMS working on a Blackberry used on Boost, see the BoostBerry How-To sticky. Also see the BoostBerry Wiki page.

If you feel it needs updating, feel free to pm mesome more info and we'll see how/if it can be fit in. Since I don't have Boost (which may change soon), if you can refer me to something in writing if its in regards to Boost policy/charges/etc that would be best.

Great FAQ! I wanted to note that several users of HowardForums have reported success in using a Sprint CDMA phone on Boost. Boost actually does offer CDMA service for the Motorola w385, KRZR, and C290 phones. Can you update the FAQ with more details about how we can convert CDMA phones into Boost phones?

Texting on a blackberry is different than a normal cell phone and requires service books. Since boost doesn't formally support blackberry devices.... they don't offer the service books for them... which is why texting doesn't work.

Just as a small suggestion: Maybe this can be made into a general Boost FAQ thread and cover Pay-as-you-go service as well as Unlimited? Since I know there's still plenty out there who use the Paygo service rather than Unlimited, myself included.
