Anything is possible- Nationwide vs America's Choice
I have been expressing my concerns about the Nationwide Plan and how unfair it really is. Well today, something amazing just happened. For the past several months we have been getting $1.99 charges on our line that we were not using. All services (excepting picture messaging) we blocked. Each month I would ask for a credit and they would comply. Well today, my line had a .01 data usage (which I didn't use). I talked to tech supervisor and she told me it was because I had turned on the music player (which I hadn't). But this is what I discovered. If someone had downloaded a song (for free or otherwise) even after the song was paid for, everytime that person launches the music player, it incurrs a data usuage, so anyone on the Nationwide plan is going to get charged $1.99 for that month. How about that for double dipping?
I explained again how I "hated" the Nationwide plan and told her how I was forced into it by upgrading to an LG Decoy for my wife. She put me on hold a minute and then came back with this amazing bit of information: The LG Decoy does not and never did require an Nationwide plan and she would try to get me back on America's Choice. She called me back several hours later saying she was still working on this.
Anyway the moral of this story is: watch your bill carefully if you don't have any intention of accessing data. This is a flaw in their plan. And I just can't understand why you have to pay for listening to a song that you have already purchased.
And don't let Verizon tell you that once something is in stone, it can't be reversed. Anything's possible. Get rid of Nationwide!

Is it even possible to move someone to a plan that doesn't even exist anymore (unless you never gave it up)? This just seems odd to me. The fact that she's still working on it tells me something isn't right.

I believe I read on another thread that it was possible, but only within 30 days of switching.

That doesn't sound right as far as using the music player will charge you 1.99 for the month. Certain data usage is not billed like MMS, My Verizon access on the WAP browser, VCAST Music song downloads... in any case why is the music player connecting to the network? Do you see the phone connecting when you launch the player? The player works in standalone mode so it's not like it needs outside data to function.

Could it be that some music involves DRM and thus requires a check with the server regarding licensing, which is what ends up using data? Doesn't make it any better or fair, but perhaps provides some sort of an explanation.
Well I never really looked at the music player, since I don't use it. My .01 of data usage occurred on January 27th at 10:30 AM. Since I teach in school, I knew exactly what I was doing then: I had just finished my break and since reception in our building is so poor I decided to do a *228. Now Verizon insists that *228 has nothing to do with data and all I am saying is that is what I was doing. And guess what? Verizon can see that I did hit *228 on the 27th. So someone tell me what's going on here? I don't even own an ipod and I don't listen to the music player on my phone. Anyway I certainly will let everyone know later what happens.

I had some unexplained data usage charges show up on my account, and as fast as they appeared, they disappeared. But I have VPAK on my NW plan and shouldn't see any data tallied, since it is unlimited. There could have been some programming errors in the system.
One benefit of the NW program over the ACII program that is often overlooked is that data works in the enhanced extended coverage area under NW and does not work under ACII. I have a need for data coverage in those areas, so switching to NW was a must. Didn't have that many unused minutes to spare to stick with ACII. And now that I have the Dare, it's no longer an option.

There are applications which make automatic use of data on a periodic basis. For example, checking for email, and getting the latest weather or stock reports, come to mind. I mean, your phone uses data to check for email, even if there is none.
While this might not apply to the OP, there are people who "forget" about these types of applications, and wonder why they are using (being billed for) data at times they are sure they aren't using their phone.

While that is certainly true, I think that situation doesn't apply to most users.
BTW, I had over 22,000 minutes to spare each month (free N&W !) with ACII to use for data.
