Can someone explain to me why i can't install about 50% of what i want onto my E71x?
I just got an E71x, great device....however I just want to put Conversation on it. Is that too much to ask? It just opens and then closes, just as Nokia Chat does. Hellocarbide opens, when i hit Menu1, it just says "Application Closed:Hellocarbide" What am I doing wrong? Also i'd like to put Nokia Maps on and it says i need the base package first. I've searched high and low for this so called "base package" with no luck.
What is locking this thing down? Also when i do *#0000# i get a different version screen than I do on the unlocked N95 I have next to me.
Make sure you have install all checked in app manager setting. Hellocarbide won't work on any e71 with new firmware because its un hackable. Then set your date back a year incase the certificates are expired and try to use pc suite if you can, I have way better luck installing through pc suite then any other method.

Aye, I do think i have the newest firmware. RM-462 is what I get under the *#0000# thing. I google'd and saw something like RM-347 or something around that was the newest E71 firmware. Apparently i'm screwed for right now? Why isn't it letting me install Nokia Conversation though? I tried installing via phone and PC Suite with the same results. The error I get is "Unable to install, component is builtin" when i go to install the Phonebook Extension Manager. According to a site the E71x is actually an E71-5. Is that right?
Am i also correct that this thing cannot be switched to GSM mode only? It's locked to 3g like the stupid Blackberry Bold I just traded for this thing. I'm starting to want my Bold back now....grrrr.
The only option in there is "Cell info display." The unbranded N95 on my desk lets me choose whatever i want.
Thanks for nothing AT&T, my battery life on this thing is shite. I'm tempted to head to a Best Buy to open a new line on our business account just so i can get a proper E71 that lets me do stuff.
RM-347 and RM-462 are not actually the firmware versions. The latest E71 firmware released (a couple days ago) is 200.21.118 . Because the E71x has not officially been released by AT&T yet, as far as I know, it will probably have a lower firmware version.
On the E71-2, you can switch to GSM only by selecting menu, tools, settings, phone, network and then changing network mode from "dual mode" to GSM
As far as the software installation, you might check under menu, tools, settings, applications, app. manager and making sure Software Installation is set to "All" and Online Certificate Check is set to "Off". I don't know if that will make a difference or not for the applications you are trying to install.
when you say e71x, do mean that you bought a prototype and are having software issues?
I mean i bought it off of Craigslist, and i'm starting to think i got a prototype after your post lol. It's AT&T branded on the bottom, and I can't seem to install anything from Nokia's Beta site that I want, nor can I find the actual software version that's on it using the same method as my N95-3 here. And to stop the generic reposting of the "online certification" thing, i've already turned it to "all" and not to check online for validity. This is the output of *#0000#

Would you be better off changing the product code to be the standard nokia e71 NAM? Then at least you'd be on unbranded firmware . That is of course if it is possible.

Yeah I have been doing a little bit of research on that, and i'm not sure I want to dive into that quite yet. If i can get Conversation installed then i'll be a happy camper. This thing came with AT&T Telenav and my work pays for that so I suppose that'll work for now. Or i'll try out Garmin Mobile XT at some point and that might suffice.
att does not sell this phone, as far as i know. there was talk of one being sold on ebay last week so you prob got it.
if i got stuck with one i would try to change the product code and then flash the newest software on to it. there is a guide on symbian-guru.com in the discussion on the newest firmware. THIS COULD BRICK YOUR PHONE, SO DO AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
i used the guide on symbian-guru last night and changed my product code as i have the nam version that didnt get the update. i have no idea if yours will work. as for garmin, it works really well on the e71

Well holy crap. I like this phone quite a bit, but this is a bit much
EDIT: Well apparently this is what's behind the battery cover.

I think I have myself a cool little prototype device.
