I talked to my local Cingular store about when the iPhone might come in and they said that the store wouldn't retail it and that you had to sign up at the Cingular site in order to get it.
It's like going to a McDonald's for a big mac --- there is really no way to tell whether that particular restaurant is owned by McDonald's themselves or some franchisee.
Corporate stores are owned and operated by Cingular themselves --- and they will sell iphones. Agent stores have the same store signs and logos as the corporate stores ---but they are owned and operated by Cingular agents. Agent stores aren't going to be allowed to sell the iphones.

though it is probably true that the website will be one of the first places that you can order the phone and without the hassle of reps telling you need a data plan with that.

best way to find out which is a corp store is to go on cingular.com and look at the stores around you. it will tell which are the corp and which are not.

can someone please tell me why anyone would rather go to a non-corp store to begin with?
in canada we have non-corp dealers and people allways complain about extra fees and not getting the plan that they wanted.
So why do people go to these stores when they can just go to the source directly knowing that there will not be any potential for bad service or scamming?
are you able to get extras?
I'm guessing that non-corp stores are not trustworthy and that is why they are not allowed to sell the iPhone...

I dont think it is a matter of people going to non-corp stores as a preference...I think it is more a case of not knowing what is and isnt a corp store...
