Smile [TUTORIAL] Cingular w810i - debranded features without debranding

OK, so here it is.

http://rapidshare.com/files/1614572...rw810i.rar.html
http://www.filefactory.com/file/8a96b4/ (mirror)

Alot of people (especially me!) have expressed dissatisfaction with the debranding process and Cingular's w810i, since Cingular has made some pretty nice modifications to the stock firmware, and when you debrand, you lose this nifty stuff.

So, here we go, a method to get the added features of debranding, without actually having to debrand. Unfortunatly this method still requires flashing (uses the FAR+SEFP method described on SE-NSE)

This is only the first release, I plan to update the package after receiving some feedback and when I get some more free time. I'll post any updates to this thread.

I've attached the readme file as an attachment. It is also contained inside the .rar package.
Attached Files
File Type: zip readme.zip (5.9 KB, 2415 views)

what "pretty nice modifications" has Cingular made to the W810i that are worth keeping, just out of curiosity?

I agree in one respect - earpiece volume and earpiece quality.. but I wanted to hear what you thought

There are several features that are designed into the firmware specifically for cingular's network features, Number of voicemails waiting on voicemail icon being one. Mobile Email is also a great push email client that runs on system sms messages so you get no data or sms charges to receive push email notifications..

Pretty much those are the only 2 major things I wanted, and they arent really very major, but hey if you can have them vs. not having them, why not There are a number of other modifications cingular has done to the firmware that I have not had a chance to look at yet..

I see you can customize Bluetooth HID profiles. What does that do for you exactly?

Yes, this release allows you to keep all the Cingular features, like aim/msn/yahoo etc.

Bluetooth HID Profiles let you remotely control something.. like do a presentation without having to use the mouse to advance frames.. or change channels on a TV tuner without having to press the channel up key on the keyboard.

I just performed the following parts of the mods:

====== Customize.xml changes: ======
(activity key unlock only)
====== Layout.xml changes: ======
====== Acoustics: ======
====== Camera Driver: ======

I don't see any difference in layout. Also, I don't see the new camera options. Where are they?

Audio hiss seems to be much improved, if not gone completely! Very cool.

Info on the camera driver can be found here:

http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopi...=135737&start=0

Seems that there have been several newer versions posted by others (who altered Chengrong's setup), so you may want to give those a try if the included one isn't working properly.

I believe you get at the options by changing the EV+ or - in the camera screen.

The fonts should appear a bit smaller in the text input field for dialing phone numbers etc. for the layout, and there should be some other small changes.. There's a chance I messed up and included the stock layout.xml instead of the modded one, i'll have to take a closer look.. I wrote most of this at 3 AM, so cut me some slack, lol ;D

Edit: Nevermind about the previous question. I put everything in, but I still can't use a mp3 as a ringtone. I'm assuming everything else, however, is functioning correctly (have new camera functions, new themes work).

All right I am getting more comfortable with this after having done it a couple of times. Hit the wrong "master reset" and sure hosed things.

The essence then is, flash OS with non-os. Mess around in file system with modified FAR tool. Flash OS back to life with real OS. Question is, if I am looking for something I screwed up, is it necessary to do the flash sequences or can I just go work with it in FAR?

Second little question is, where do I find setting for Activity key? It is now a 2nd or 3rd music player key so I think I messed up. At least it is not "Jack Splat goes to Media Net to whiz away money."

Census, yes, we are just loading all the cingular stuff back onto the phone, with a tweak here and there.

Tszefr, the .ssw flash is required for FAR+SEFP to be able to break into the phone. If you don't have the .ssw loaded it won't work.

As far as the activity key goes, i've managed to turn it into another walkman key too, only once though out of 40 or so flashes, i'm not sure how I did it. I'll look into that.

Mighty fine. I just went back and looked and adjusted in Customize.xml

<activity-menu-present>false</activity-menu-present>
<activity-menu-present>true</activity-menu-present>

Just hacking here; don't really know what I am doing. Activity key is back though so I am delighted.

Aw s**t! Cingular build lacks Johnny Crash does Texas! How will I ever survive without JC??? Not sure how to put S/E mail tool back either. Maybe it is QuadraPop.jar. I see JC there in a jar file in the backup too. Actually think I will leave him there. With Mobile Email, Morange and Gmail I think I probably have enough mail tools for one little phone.

This really is fantastic stuff. Wonder how long before someone ports Linux to this phone?

Oops! Morange cannot access phone book. It could in S/E firmware release. Not obvious how to fix it. Read/Write User data gets "Permissions not configurable." Ideas?

Check out the security certificates in \tpa\preset\custom on the unbranded FS vs. the branded one, it may be that we need to include a few of those.

Thanks for the tutorial. It was very easy to follow.

One question: When I'm listening to music on the speakerphone, there still exists a hissing sound. Easy way to repro: Play any song and pause the song. You still hear background noise. Is there a fix for this?
