SOLVED: How to tether BlackJack over Bluetooth

Okay, I've finally figured out how to tether your BlackJack to a PC (or any device supporting the PAN profile) over Bluetooth. (I'm actually posting this over my BT connection!)

You will need the following:

1) A BlackJack (Samsung i607)
2) A data plan, unless you want to quickly go bankrupt :-)
3) A Bluetooth adapter
4) Windows XP SP2's Bluetooth stack (others may work, not tested yet)

Step 1: Pair the computer and your Blackjack using steps discussed in the manual.

Step 2: Launch the "Internet Sharing" application on your BlackJack. It can be found in the \Windows folder. (To locate it: Start -> Applications -> File Explorer -> \Windows -> Internet Sharing)

Step 3: Choose "Bluetooth PAN" as the PC connection, and "MEdia Net" as the network connection

Step 4: Hit "Connect" (left soft key)

Step 5: On the PC, go to Start > Network Connections. Click on the "Bluetooth network connection" icon. Choose your BlackJack, and hit Connect.

Voila!

Thanks - I went onto the cd that came with the BJ today to get the manual onto my pc. When I did I looked at the extra programs that were on the cd. One is a program is described as enabling the device to be used as a modem. I didn't have time to take a look at it yet.

Oh, that's a USB driver. That's for tethering over a USB cable via a simulated dialup connection. You don't need it to tether over Bluetooth.

Update

Just tested with the PAN client in the IVT BlueSoleil stack (v2.3 060728). Works fine. Throughput is around 350kbps with my Thinkpad builtin 1.0 USB device.

Won't happen until Apple adds PAN profile support to the Bluetooth stack in OS X. Maybe it's in the works for 10.5? We won't know until it's released.

Awesome. Just set it up and is working like a champ. Any idea (still new to WM5) how to make it easier to navigate to the "Internet Sharing" application? Can I make a shortcut or something?

Through activsync, explore your device. Go to \Windows, and you can right click the file for Internet Sharing, and make a shortcut. Or, you might be able to hit copy, and then go to your start menu, and copy as shortcut.

What about using the Blackjack as a modem using the USB cable, is it possible?

BlackJack + VMWare Fusion + WinXP = OSX internet?

thinlyveiled-

You are the man!

For all you fellow Mac users out there, I had a thought and am attempting to work through it... VMWare Fusion runs on the new Intel Macs (with full Bluetooth support), and Bluetooth pairing works with Windows, so I'm attempting to install WinXP on a VM, get that paired with my BJ and then share the internet connection with my Mac. I'm desperate to get it working within OSX on my MacBook Pro, as that's where I do most of my work on the road.

Does anyone have any suggestions about using Internet Connection Sharing in Windows? Any other ideas I might not have thought of?
