I know it's been posted a few times, but I figure I would start a more thorough analysis of what I've tried to do with this phone
...i've looked for stuff on both the vx8300 and vx5300, both have equivalent data compared to the lg 245, and nothing
i have a data cable taht connects to the computer..but i can't get, for the life of me, the phone to be recognized in any way.
using the same chord, and various different versions of bitpim, I can get my other phones (at one point 5450, and currently the 6190) to be recognize and to do whatever editing i want
does anyone know of any way to get the 245 to be recognized inside bitpim? or any program? or to put your own ringtones?
*ANY* help on this would be amazingly appreciated, from one cell user to another
thank you!
the lg 245 is an awesome phone for the price. cheapest phone with bluetooth and all those extra bells and whistles for the price. if i can only get the cable to work, everything will be gravy...
i've been able to bluetooth the phone to the computer... but there is no support on it from bitpim.
i did what most people with the "5300" (verizon-equivalent) and put 8300 as the phone it shojuld connect to...i get all kinds of errors....HOWEVER, I am able to get into the filesystem
the only problem, once in the filesystem, I have no clue where to go... even the "usr" folder doesn't seem clear
if there's any help on this or anyone knows anything more...PLEASE post here or message me...thank you
I connected my lg 245 via bluetooth and Bitpim detects it as a VX8100, which is odd, but ok. I cannot send anything to the phone the "regular" way, but I can get into the filesystem too =D.
truthlesshero:
mp3s go in /brew/16452/mds
wallpapers: /brew/16452/mdw
my photos is /mp
my sounds is /ms
ffrom what I figured out.
Pictures transfer no problem and I can set them as a wallpaper.
BUT
I can send an MP3 or a MIDI file to the phone via the filesystem, but when I try to set it as ringtone, I get a message "Non-DRM protected file." This is TELUS being a b*tch and thusfar, I have found no way around this.
I tried DRM packager from both Sony Ericsson and the Nokia Mobile Internet Toolkit. I get a .dm file, which I then send to the phone and it can't even play it.
One other option is something called Media Audio Cutter which will upload a DRM-MP3 for download to the phone, but the trial only allows exports of 15 seconds and the DRM function is disabled. It's 14.99 US to register...
Anything free?
i can feel us getting very very close to finding a solution to this...
i had figured out everything as well, except for that damn non-drm message...so i'll keep you posted if i find something different or if you find something...

Price wise the Pantech and Samsung 870 both have bluetooth as well free on contract, but for buyout the LG245 is not so shabby, especially if you buy the talk away one. The only problem I have come across with the 245 so far, is that its LG
how did you get the pictures that you sent to your phone to work? I can send them no problem, put them in the same directories, but they don't even pop up on the phone
in order for the mp3s to display on the phone, i ahve to delete aod.dat and let the phone regenerate the file on reboot...then i get the drm error
is there a file i have to delete in order to get the same effect for wallpapers?
let me know! thanks!
*MAJOR UPDATE*
I GOT THE MP3S TO WORK! DIE YOU DRM MESSAGE DIE!
There is a trick and pattern to editing the aod.dat file through a hex editor
I have to go for now, but i iwll post later if any are interested in how to do it

like i said, i got the mp3 ringtones to work...getting by the DRM message through hex editing the aod.dat file..
HOWEVER...i can only get two files at a time to work...meaning that as soon as i put a third one in, i get the DRM message for the third one ONLY....
seems i figured out the pattern when there's only two files...but when there's three or more... i'm lost again...
if anyone has a fool proof plan... please post or let me know
All you have to do is delete aod.dat and reboot the phone. The file will be recreated and the ringtones will work.
EDIT: My mistake, the files will play, but you can't set them as ringtones. Any way you could post your edited aod.dat file and explain the pattern that you found.
another update...

Hello all! just a quick question..I just got an lg245 for my mother yesterday and was wondering is there a way to send a pic so that I can set it as a wallpaper..what format does it have to be...I know the size..also the same can be said for a ringtone..
so..the mp3s are unlocked...
the image/wallpaper thing seems to work...
now let's get the games and apps on there, and the phone will reach its' full potential =->
Yeah, that's the next mission!

omg, it is silver on the inside, from the pics on the Telus page, how horribly ugly!
Maybe someone who has got images/wallpaper and ringtones to work can post a little guide on doing so. Just got a cable, but I've never done this before.
Hi all,
I've appreciated the past posts on file transfer by truthlesshero, et al. So, I thought I'd add what I've found: basically a summary for image and mp3/ringtone file transfer.
To start, I'm connecting to my LG 245 (Telus) via a bluetooth connection. [I believe there may be USB connectors, and the principle ought to be the same.] From your PC, pair with the phone and connect the bluetooth Serial Port. It should connect on a COM port (ie - COM5 for me). Using BitPim (http://www.bitpim.org/), setup the BitPim Settings to use your corresponding bluetooth/serial COM port. For 'Phone Type', it seems to work with LG-VX8100, 8300, and also "Other CDMA phone". Once configured select the Filesystem icon on the left menu (NB: none of the other functions will work, such as "Get/Send Phone Data"). From the Filesystem menu, you should see your root (/) and various directories: OWS, VoiceDB, ..., brew, etc. At this point you can send files to and from your phone, so we're off to the races.
Images: Ok, so I can't figure out a graceful way to do these... The issue is that the phone's filesystem will not recognize your image files that you transfer via BitPim because it needs to update an index file that tells it how many images it actually has. So the options are: 1) download /dload/image.dat and modify the HEX file. (2) [the easier way] is to take photos (with the phone's camera), rename them and then copy your image file to brew/16452/mp/ using that existing name (ie - overwriting the file). This seems to be the easiest way.
MP3s: For the same filesystem/indexing issue as with the images, you will have to do some HEX/dat file editing. Download a freeware HEX editor online (google it- there are many). So the first thing to do is to copy your MP3 file over to /brew/16452/mds/ (I'm guessing mds stands for MyDownloadedSounds). I suggest cropping the file as you don't need anything too long for a ringtone (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ works nicely for editing mp3s). Anyway, once the file has uploaded to the phone, go to /dload/aod.dat. Delete this file (I suggest backing it up first, just to be on the safe side). Restart your phone (turn off, then on again). The phone will re-generate this dat file and you will now see the MP3 that you uploaded in the list. Unfortunately, it will not be recognized as a ringtone as it's not Telus's DRM-MP3 (ie - Telus's squeezing-blood-from-a-stone method of collecting their fees). Next...the HEX editing:
Download aod.dat to your PC via BitPim and view it in a HEX editor:
In the file, I see multiple entries - one per audio file. So from byte address 0x00 to 0x93 [#147 in decimal] (that's 0 to 93 in hexadecimal = base 16) is a single entry. Viewing the ASCII representation, starting at 0x00, I see four characters (xx 03 06 04 in HEX) followed by "brew/16452/mds/filename.mp3". Nearer the end of the 0x93 character block, there are two other words of 4 and three bytes.
For those who care, the first byte/character is a running count, the groups of four and three at the end of the entry block are related to the file's properties (file size, etc).
So the important part: change the byte at address 0x03 from 04 to 00. Then change the byte at address 0x84 (#132) from 00 to 01.
Send this updated aod.dat file back to your phone. The first file should be unlocked for use as a ringtone.
This pattern works for all of the files on my phone. So you can upload more MP3s and edit each 148-character block in the same two positions.
NB: your phone is only set to take "downloads" up to 5MB, so if you exceed that limit, the aod.dat file will not be regenerated for all of the files. In this case you can enter the 148-byte entries manually.
If the pattern doesn't work for you, I suggest downloading a free Ringtone from Telus (tocatta, Bach - under 'Free Trial' if you log into the mytelusmobility site. NB: charges may apply for accessing the web via your phone ~5 cents per page). I recommend downloading that free ringtone, viewing your aod.dat file and looking at how it differs. You can then apply those changes to unlock your other MP3s.
Alright, that's what I've found so far. Hopefully, we'll be able to figure out the Java games/apps for this phone too!
I have the LG 245 and a cpmputer with the Bluetooth adapter.
I cant even get the LG 245 phone to show up.I found my buddys cell phone in the next room but not my 245.
How did you guys get the 245 to show up on your computer via bluetooth.???
Places to start would probably be (from the phone): Menu > 9 > 6 > 5 > 2 and ensure Bluetooth is selected. Next, go to Menu > 9 > 4 for options all about Bluetooth. Ensure the power is on (menu 1), and then change your Discovery Mode (3) to Visible. Try to view it from your PC. Actually, it's probably easier just to search for your PC from the phone (2 > options > 1) and try to initiate pairing.
Hope that helps.

Same problem as SaberX. I can't initiate the communication from my PC to my cell phone. Same thing from my cell phone to my PC (it tells me No paired device). On the other hand it's working from my PC to my pocket PC (Dell AXIM).
hey all,
completely new to cell phones, just bought an LG 245 yesterday, been doing reverse engineering for about 4 years now so i'm sure eventually I could help out.
Well I bought an after market USB cable for my phone, works good, even easier than I imagined. I'll look into the bytes that are changed tomorow, and the reasoning they need to be. As for now, Just wanted to let you guys know my last questions are useless, other than expanding the memory.
With bitpim, i'm able to access the file system using bluetooth and the lg-vx8300 phone type. I send ringtones and wallpaper.
I think the problem with the other tools (phonebook, media, calandar...) is the file structure of the lg 245. At the beginning i received an error when bitpim tried to read the phonebook (get phone data button). LG 245 /pim/pbgroup.dat is 22 bytes long and the is 23 on the vx8300. I modified the length in the py files and i was able to read the phone using the button. It read without error,
I'm not able to move things between my computer and the phone. When i send a ringtone to the phone bitpim put the file in the directory brew/16452/lk/mr instead of brew/16452/mds.
