VX8000 TIPS/TRICKS/FAQ
Backup your phone!!! READ THIS IMPORTANT INFORMATION BEFORE YOU
START
Myself and other forum members have already had problems with adding our own
movies/tunes and having the phone act strange on reboot. So please everyone,
before you start expirementing, make a complete backup of your phone via
QPST, backup the file structure via the "EFS Explorer" and backup your
system settings via "Software Download" backup section or "Service
Programmings" save feature (after you read the info from the phone).
If you do screw up, the results are not pretty. I was able to replace some
of the files I lost because of a fellow forum member but my programming
settings were messed up. If I had backed them up with QPST before I may have
not had this problem.
Anyways backup everything and take it slow. Also I personally suggest you
only add a few new things of each type, ie.. 3 tunes, 3 ringers, 2
videos...dont add anything too big also, there are size limits which are
listed below in this FAQ...take note of them.
Take into account that QPST can be very dangerous to your phone if you don't
know what your doing. At any time something could go wrong. The safest
things you can do to the phone are adding a few ringtones, tunes, and
images. Videos are the next easiest thing to add, but they could cause file
storage limit problems causing phones to reboot endlessly. Games arent very
well tested and would be the highest risk.
People have messed up their phones storing around 35-40mb of data on the
phone in various categories...until firmware updates happen its highly
suggested you keep your "QPST added" data to around 20mb, to prevent
additional risks of storage limitations. Adding data directly from Get It
Now or other phone services is of course a lot safer.
Storage limits by section (supplied by VerizonStore)
The combined total of storage space for videos and mp3 songs are 48 mb.
However you can only store about 6 mb in the ringers catagory. If you want
to load mp3 songs to your phone, you must store them in the tunes section.
You can also store applications in the get it now catagory up to 7 mb. The
combined total for tunes "mp3s" and videos cannot exceed 47 mb. You can
check how much memory you have left by pushing the menu button and goto the
get it now category and then press the right upper soft key for the info
button. then go down to contents memory and it will tell you how much space
you have.
To access the VX800 service menu:
1. from the main screen, hit "ok" to enter the menu.
2. make sure the "contacts" tab is selected, then press 0 (zero)
3. the service code should be all zero's.
To change Get-it-Now application servers:
1. enter the VX8000 service menu
2. select #9 "get it now settings"
3. select #3 "IP/URL"
4. select the server you want and hit the left soft key to give it priority.
To add video to the VX8000:
1. Connect your data cable to the vx8000 (at the time of this writing, the
vx6000 and vx7000 futuredial cables at radio shack worked).
2. load up QPST, in particular the EFS Explorer.
3. BACKUP and delete /dload/video.dat
4. browse to /brew/media/ and put a .3gp video file in the folder.
5. reset the phone, the videos will appear in the "FLIX Gallery" in
get-it-now
*just recently got this working, video files I had put in
/brew/verizonmediaplayer/download/ would not play, but when the same files
were put in /brew/media/ they did play, dont know why but it works now
**the phone will recognize the .wmv, .asf, and .3gp formats, but as of
current only .3gp files have played flawlessly. You can convert your video
files to this format by using Quicktime Pro or Nokia Multimedia Converter
(thanks nemadrol for the program names). The Nokia program can be found at

To add ringtones to the phone:
1. Connect your data cable to the vx8000 (at the time of this writing, the
vx6000 and vx7000 futuredial cables at radio shack worked).
2. load up QPST, in particular the EFS Explorer.
3. BACKUP and delete /dload/sound.dat
4. place .mp3 or .mid files into either of the following directories:
/dload/snd/
/user/sound/ringer/ (you can create this folder if it doesn't exist)
5. reset the phone, the tones will be displayed in the ringtone section.

if you add "ringers" to your phone, the storage limit is around 6 to 10 mb
in that area. There is no warning or memory checker for that section. So
when you add "ringers" to your phone make sure you only add about 30 seconds
of your song to the phone since your phone only rings for about 30 seconds
or less. Also make sure the quality of your tunes are only about 64kbs
since the speaker in your phone can't play above that quality. Add the rest
of the songs you like to hear in your "Tunes" catagory which can hold up to
47 mb of songs which is alot of songs if you change your songs quality to 64
kbs instead of the normal 128kbs since the lg 8000 speaker can only play
64kbs quality or less and anything above that would be a waste of storage
space.
To add tunes to the phone:
1. Connect your data cable to the vx8000 (at the time of this writing, the
vx6000 and vx7000 futuredial cables at radio shack worked).
2. load up QPST, in particular the EFS Explorer.
3. BACKUP and delete /dload/aod.dat
4. Place your mp3 files in the /brew/shared/aod/ directory
5. reset the phone, the tones will be displayed in the tunes section

To add tunes to your lg 8000 phone, you must put the new songs in the
brew/shared/aod/ directory. This will allow you to play your tunes "Songs"
on the front of your lg 8000 by pressing and holding the play button in the
front of the phone for 3 seconds. You can either add new songs to that
directory and delete the aod.dat file or you can create fake files using
your voice to record someting and overwrite that file using your new song
name when adding it to your directory. Its called the overwriting function
instead of adding new songs then deleating the aod.dat file. This way you
don't have to delete any aod.dat or video.dat or any file when adding a new
song or video to your phone. Also make sure the quality of your tunes are
only about 64kbs since the speaker in your phone can't play above that
quality. You need a music editing software program to convert your mp3
songs to 64kbs quality. I personally use cool edit pro but there are
hundreds out there on the web that you can use. As for the sound of the mp3s
when you play them on the front of the phone, the sound is loud and very
good quality even at 64kbs. They give you a hands free headset with your lg
8000 and you can even make the mp3 louder when using the headset.
To add images to the phone:
1. Connect your data cable to the vx8000 (at the time of this writing, the
vx6000 and vx7000 futuredial cables at radio shack worked).
2. load up QPST, in particular the EFS Explorer.
3. BACKUP and delete /dload/image.dat
4. place image files (apparently BMP, WBMP, PNG, WPNG, JPEG, GIF formats)
into /dload/img/
5. reset the phone, the images will appear in the "PIX Gallery" in
get-it-now.
6. If you want a picture in the gallery as wallpaper, highlight it and hit
the right softkey "options" and select #3 "Set As" and then choose an
option.

*The internal screen size is 176x220 but actual picture size appears to be
176x144. I am fairly certain though that you can use any picture size and it
will get rescaled automatically to fit.
Some data cable and network information
#Just a few notes beforehand...there is conflicting data on if the use of
the vx-8000 with the datacable for internet services is a violation of the
trial terms of service, you can read more information about this on pages
4-6 of this thread.

Just some notes on using a data cable with the vx8000. I've played with it
for a couple hours...
* I used the FutureDial data USB cable that I bought for my vx6000 last
year. The cable works with the vx8000, but the connector takes a bit too
much pressure to make with phone, so it may not be an exact mechanical fit.
NOTE: the cable *may* be flakey due poor mechanical or electrical fit. I
have had occasional unexplained difficulty connecting to QPST, snapsync and
snapdial.
* I downloaded the newest FutureDial USB drivers (dated Nov 2004) from the
FutureDial.com site. The driver supports 115,200 baud. I set the phone to
RS-232C(COM Port) at the 115,200 speed.

* I updated my futureDial SnapSync and SnapDial programs via hte futuredial
site.
* When configuring the FutureDial software, I chose LG vx7000 as the phone
(vx8000 is not listed).
* SnapDial created both a 2G and 3G dialup network connection (DUN).
2G -- The 2G DUN is set to use old QNC network and I get transfer rates of
about 14Kbps. The phone display reports "PPP[QNC] Call" when connected.
3G -- The 3G DUN uses EN/EVDO data network. I used the vzw/vzw
username/password. The phone displays "1x-EVDO Data" when connected within
EVDO range and displays "1x Data" when out of EVDO range. I was getting the
full 115Kbps when connected via "1x-EVDO Data".
I haven't been able to get a higher speed CABLE connection via the phone's
USB setting... will tinker with that later and see if we can get the data
rate up into the 1Mbps range.

First of all, go ahead and go to the futurdial site and update your driver
if you already havnt. Then, once you're sure you have an updated driver, go
ahead and plug in the cable and phone (dont open up QPST yet), and then in
your phone, go to Settings & Tools, then #5 Call Settings, and then #7 data
settings, then #2 PC Connection, and then #2 RS-232c(COM PORT), and adjust
your port speed to 115200. (im assuming you have Windows XP) you also have
to make sure windows is detecting the software--the updated driver should be
detected--if not you'll need to go to the Add Hardware Wizard (right click
on My computer, go to Properties, hardware tab, and there it is) and just
show the computer where the updated driver is located.
then, go ahead and open up QPST Configuration. Click on Add New Port, and
keep entering different COM numbers, like COM1, COM2, COM3...until your
phone is detected. After it's detected, go to the EFS Explorer in the QPST
program, and then from there on, just read the first page of this thread and
itll show you how to add tunes.
You dont need any additional software like SnapSync for it to work..just
follow the directions..

I did it again. I added too many videos and tunes to my lg 8000 phone. I
went past 40mb in the application section but didn't go past the 47mb limit
in that catagory. I guess there really is a software flaw if you go past 40
mb in the tunes and video section. Now my phone just keeps restarteing
itself and turning off and on constantly like JTPRO's phone was doing. Thats
the bad news, here is the good news. I just called telesales support line
again and told them that the phone is no good and they shipped me another
new phone today! So now I have three lg 8000 phones. One brand new one and
two that are going to get flashed with new software programming at my local
verizon store. So if any of you guys "mess up" your phones again, don't
worry just call telesales within 15 days and they will ship you another one
no problem. And I guess there is no limit of how many you fry and get
because this is my third phone lg 8000 they have sent me. So no worries!
Its true what I said. I messed up two of my lg 8000 phones already and each
time I call telesales about it they sent me a new one over night. I just
told them that the phone they sent me was defective and they said they were
sorry for shipping me a defective phone and will ship me a new one next day
over night and they did!. Of course I didn't tell them that I was messing
around with the phone's file system adding videos and mp3s to my phone. I
just tell them that the phone came to me that way. If your guy's phones mess
up just tell telesales that your phone came like that or if you had it a
long time tell them that when you turned on the phone this morning after
charging it all night, it went haywire. And if this third phone oof mine
goes nuts after i put too much mp3s and videos in it, I will get another one
through telesales with the same excuss, no worries.

Actually there is a way to upload games to your lg 8000 phone. However,
these games must be in java oob mode (object oriented programming), and must
be less than 6mb long since you only have 6 mb of storage in your get it now
games catagory. If you do have a java game less than 6 mb of length, using
your Qpst program, goto /dload directory and copy and delete the premium.dat
file. Then goto the /brew/shared/premium/ directory and copy your game file
to that directory. Your old lg 6000 games should work on this phone also.
You can copy your old games from your lg 6000 phone and put them in your lg
8000 phone.
