I ended up with a broken charge port on my Epix after what I consider a very slight fall while charging. Went with the Tilt2, thankfully I got hooked up with a massively early upgrade discount and the 18 dollar fee waived. I bought, and returned for the Epix, an original Tilt. It was WAY slow on screen orientation changes etc and overall just wasn't all that great. The Tilt2 is in a whole other league, awesome huge screen, fast, etc. I definitely wouldn't have gone with an Epix 2 even if one had been available after the debacle the Epix updates were. I would have considered a similar candybar qwerty phone had someone good made one, but no one did and the tilt 2 seemed like the best compromise. I considered the iPhone and the Pure but I like a physical keyboard even if its just for backup and I felt like the Tilt2 had the strongest overall feature set available. If anyone has an Epix with a good mainboard and a bad something else give me a shout.

i would buy an epix 2. because how could they screw up this bad again? samsung doesn't have a reputation for duds like this phone has been, so I think an epix 2 would be great. most important feature of course is the thumb mouse. can't live without it now. that's why i haven't moved to any of the 6.5 roms and that's why i'm praying real hard for an official 6.5 update.

All of their updates seem to break something or another. They fix SLOG DUMP by killing GPS, and many months later still no fix. No more getting screwed by Samsung/AT&T on Winmobile phones for me. They played games with release dates of updates with the Blackjack as well.

I'm with you on the Blackjack, WinMo 6.1 official came out like 4 months after I had settled on a Da_G's cooked ROM for that phone. I never even used the official updates, lol.

I've been following this thread for a long time now, and it's helped me immensely in a number of sticky situations. Unfortunately, my Epix is suddenly presenting with some worrisome symptoms I have never heard anyone else complaining of before. My guess is they're hardware-related, which doesn't bode well, but I figured I'd ask and see if anyone has a guess as to what's really going on. First is line quality, or more precisely the presence of variable earpiece high-frequency noise during calls that often the other party can hear as well. This noise is not mere static, but made up of pitch-changing, tiny whines and fast crackles that don't seem to be related to electrical or RF interference and are at times much more severe than others. The ringer speaker is not affected, and I haven't had the opportunity to try the speakerphone, though I'll do that if I can remember to. Second, the device is generating immense heat during plugged-in use and consuming battery irregularly. The heat is centralized around the area of the device behind the ringer speaker/camera lens enclosure, not the battery, and the heat does not seem to be causing the line quality issues. Every once in a while the device will complain of impending battery depletion around the 30% mark, which is not where I have the alarms set and further is rarely accurate (SPB Mobile Shell may be the culprit here, and that's the least of my worries).

Anyone had similar stuff happen with their Epix or other telephones? Anyone have an idea what might me going on? I'd replace the battery but I'm worried the problems go deeper than that, and the phone, workhorse though it has been, is approaching the end of its life. I hope this isn't the case, as trying to get my hands on another WM device as capable and with a secondary pointing device (I'm thoroughly addicted to the optical trackpad now) isn't going to be easy, unless I can land an unlocked something-or-other or that Epix 2 becomes reality quickly. Thanks in advance for your time and attention.

So I switched to VZW and picked up a Droid today. Had the Epix since last November and it was a good run. Lots of great info in this thread, thanks guys! Good luck with the Epix!

The Droid is very nice, I'm thoroughly enjoying it myself.

To Restroom: sorry to see you are runing into those problems, it sounds really annoying. I did not have that heppen to my Epix the last time I was using it so I'm afraid I can't help with ideas for fixes, but two ideas for going forward are 1) keep an eye on Ebay for Epix replacements, that is where I got my Epix, and 2) keep an eye on Blackberries, as they are soon rolling out units with the thumb pads instead of trackballs.

You mean there's blackberries with thumb mice?

i thought it was only the epix/i780/saga with them. which reminds me: anyone know if it's possible to get the saga working (data and all) on at&t? it's supposed to have gsm and a sim card on it for international use.

Several of the Blackberry models have trackballs, which I think I might actually prefer, since they'd still work properly in direct sunlight. The Epix' optical sensor is overwhelmed by it. I'm too keen on WinMo to really want to switch, though.

I really feel sorry for people who have touch-only devices. I literally cannot imagine how frustrating it would be to try to write a simple note to myself, let alone try to mark up and edit a proposal or, worse, anything with form fields or menus without both a hardware keyboard and some type of secondary navigation.
I'm a regular Tablet PC user and got excited when the MS Pink/phone/tablet/Courier rumour mill cranked up, but I'm seriously considering just getting a UMPC and using it as a telephone in a pinch. Or something. There has to be a solution out there.

wow... i cant believe Samsung would pull such a ballsy move - kudos to them.

In my opinion it is the right move, WinMob (even WinMob 6.5) is a joke compared to Android. I dont have high hopes for WinMob 7 either.. I dont believe that MS has the innovative edge it takes to truly compete anymore against companies like Google and Apple... all they have is legacy market share, which is slowing being chipped away.
