Totally agree. Sales will be fine. But once it is added, it would instantly appeal to that many more users.

And its coming, clownfish. Patience, my friend.

Sorry to ask but is there anywhere that Nokia said officially that portrait mode will be added in an update? I have not seen that mentioned on maemo.org but could have missed it.

Its there, but I can't find it right now, and too busy to search. It was said that portrait/ASR would be implemented around December. YoDude might be able to find it. There's so much on that topic alone, and I noticed if you Google it, it all leads to sites with me running my mouth... LOL But I definitely remember it was said around Dec.

And about portrait mode, Nokia has commented (unofficial) that this and other features (such as MMS) can be included in a future update.

I guess that's what it's all about the "cash cow" market. Whenever ANY phone is made it's ONLY made for the AVERAGE CONSUMER who really could give two ******************s so long as the phone costs $99.99 and instantly makes them the envy of all of their friends. Really getting tired of this BS marketing.

If I was a phone manufacturer, I would stay true to my target demographic and stop trying to be the latest in fashion and "ease of use".

There are more casual users who would rather have a phone for <$100 that's easy to use than there are power users who want something powerful.

How would you know this? Are you saying you have one?

Um, that's just it... I have portrait mode on my N810. >> LINK << I also had it on my N800 and the point of using the devices is that I'm always connected.

In the real world I do a real job... I make things and I fix things. Social networking apps are not productivity apps... Sure in my down time I keep up with friends and trends, mod a forum or three, check out the reviews of a new restaurant, make online reservations, and then update the online calendar that I share with my wife... but for the most part, the lions share of my day, a phone is a tool that I use to help perform my job.

It sounds like to me that you want a cell phone that gives you connectivity to the web so you can maintain your social graph. One handed twittering and the like. Perhaps you and others would be happier with another phone. If on the other hand, even if the social apps you use can be made better or the apps on other phones leave something to be desired, then go for the N900 and roll your own.

This device was not designed to be an iPhone killer, or the best phone Nokia has to offer. Hell all previous versions of the Maemo OS up until now didn't even have a dang cell phone. They all were capable of GPRS, WiFi, and Bluetooth, and some had WiMAX though so data and connectivity has always been their purpose.

If you know how to code or can put together web pages then this phone is definitely for you. It's the only one out there that will let you run what ya brung.

If you don't know how to code but can follow basic instructions and you have the time available and want to learn, then this phone and it's established community are for you.

If you are impressed with Nokia's cameras and optics and are interested in Computational photography, then the N900 is for you.

If on the other hand you expect the N900 to offer as good as, or better features than other phones out of the box, then you may be disappointed.

I realize there are a lot of Nokia Symbian fans and bloggers out there but Maemo has been provided by Nokia since May 25, 2005 where have you all been?

I got a good deal on my N810 but in reality I had no need to replace my N800. I had been using my N800 since January of 2007. The thing is, I still find new uses for it >> LINK << and it runs like a champ.

I blew off work yesterday morning so I could collaborate with a couple of fellows who stayed up late in their own time zone to work on another app for an almost 3 year old device. We had a blast. And guess what? With a few simple tweaks the thing will run on Maemo5 and beyond.

The N900 will still be relevant and useful in three years as well.

Some of you saying Portrait mode will be added this December have it wrong by saying it will be added to the whole system. Portrait mode will ONLY be added to the browser in an update coming this December. That's it. No system-wide portrait mode until Maemo 6.

this is not a phone. it is a mobile computer. as such, landscape is the most efficient UI.

That was my understanding as well... and again the device and Maemo5 as it stands now DOES provide portrait/ASR (automatic screen rotation) for phone functions along with portrait mode for some native applications like contacts.

Portrait mode can and will be provided by third party and community application developers if needed... just as it has been for previous tablets.

The SDK for Maemo5 has been available to bloggers and the general public for quite sometime.

Anybody can download it and run it if they wish and that fact in itself makes this phone unique among its peers.

However, I can see where there may be some problems in communication ...

That was said by a analyst, not a official Nokia source.

If Nokia said it, someone else from Nokia won't "no comment" it. It would be useless...
